Tonight I saw my son and his lifelong baseball buddy in their first HS game at home. It was a very emotional time for me even though I couldnt show it on the outside. You see I have coached his buddy and my youngest son since they were 7 at every level in the summer. They are now both freshman at my HS. They have worked so hard for many years dreaming of the day they would step on our field as players. Tonight Pratt and Jeff were the battery. Yes pitcher and catcher as Freshman on the varsity in the home opener. What happened? Pratt throws a no hitter 9ks and 2bb. Jeff threw out both baserunners of the game on steal attempts. To see them out there is one thing but to see all the hard work pay off in such a big way was awesome. They are both extremely talented but I know that they have worked so hard to put themselves in this situation. I know they have a long way to go they are only 15. But man what a feeling. You know the great thing about coaching is you have sons every year playing. And every night one of them does something that makes you proud.

Coach May,

What a story! Thanks for sharing that one. It is so nice to hear genuine baseball news at this time of the year. I look forward to following their careers over the coming years.

To offer some perspective on the accomplishment,
there are about 880 high schools in Ohio. I estimate that maybe 10-20 freshman in the entire state get to start varsity as freshman. In many cases, the reason they are starting is that the talent is depleted at the upper levels which is obviously not the case here given the production of these two talented young players (I have seen some of your other posts on them as well).

Huge congrats to them, and to you - although I know you will refuse to take much credit which is a very admirable and refreshing trait!
Coach May, that's as impressive as it is awesome. Congrats...

Similar situation here as son and couple of his buddies from T-ball days that have stayed together over the years and play summer ball together are actually all attending last day of school tryouts as I type this. They are expected to make V as sophs but we have our fingers crossed that they come home with news that they are starting at their respective positions which would be real sweet.
Thanks guys for reading it and posting. I truly appreciate all of your kinds words. Just a side note. After the game which we won 11-0 in five innings. I walked over to Pratt the pitcher and I said "Great job son I know you have worked a long time for this day". Pratt looks at me and says "Thanks coach. But I know I have got to get alot better because those guys were not very good". Confident Proud but Humble. It has said that sports dont build character sports reveal character. I believe that sports is a way of building character and giving kids an opportunity to express it. Again Thanks
When I got home late of course from the field my wife was in tears. I asked her what was wrong. She told me all she could think about was watching them when they were 10 Jeff behind the plate and Pratt on the mound winning the AAU state Championship. She said she remembered them meeting at the mound and jumping all over their teamates. Then she said where has all the time gone. All I could say was "You want to know where all the time has gone honey"? "On the ball field the only place they have ever wanted to be".
Let me add that these two boys were the same pitcher ,and catcher last summer in Sarasota,Fl. that teamed up for a no hitter against the team that finished 3rd in the national 14u AAU tourney. The results for Pratt & Jeff were much better this time. Coach May can elaborate if he wants. That game in Fl. was some kinda fun to watch.
Thanks Q I actually had forgot about that game untill you brought it up. We throw a no hitter and lost 1-0. Moc Thanks. We are off to a great start we have played three games and we have given up one earned run. Also we have pitched 19 innings and given up 5 hits. Our pitching staff has the chance to be very good. It is really young with 1 sr 1 jr 2 sophs and 1 fresh. The sophs and fresh are our #1 #2 #3. Defensively we are very solid. If we hit like we have the potential to hit it could be a special team. But right now we are just trying to get better everyday. We have a very tough non conference schedule so it should challenge us, thats good. We actually play SoutherNo1 sons team at their Easter Tourney. That should be a great game. I will keep you all posted on how we do.
