The LL pitch count debate started me thinking about what is the correct age to start a kid pitching, if ever. I have a 16 YO lefty that began pitching at age 8 or 9,fortunately, I coached him at a young age and hopefully never overused him. However, with my little guy (now 7) I am considering never having him pitch or waiting until he is at least 12 YO to start. What does everyone think the correct age to start is?

Juiceless....I would say 16 cause then nobody can over use him. If he is righty break his arm and make him lefty!!! Big Grin just kidding Moms.

Some may say thats too old but its start of Soph season and this new kid comes out throwing gas cause he did not pitch when he was young.

You only have so many pitches in your arm?

I started pitching my sophomore year in HS and was a 3rd round pick after my senior year. Don't rush young kids, it will hurt them more times than not in the long run.

OP, do we get him in 7 years? We have an instructional team right now.

He's all yours.......for the right price!
I have to say that this past weekend my 8 year old left hander pitched his first inning of baseball. He got a K for his first out and then got the next one on a pop up then the third out on a slow grounder (he did walk one). He was so excited. It made me think back to when my older son (17 years old) started out back at the same age.

My only suggestion would be to keep it simple - pitch only from the stretch, stress learning a proper break, stress a proper landing and not throwing across the body, and obviously don't pitch anything but a fastball. In addition my son is playing in a "tight" bases league so he does not have to worry about holding runners on. Plenty of time to learn about that later.

I know one thing - I have alot more patience with my 8 year old than what I had with my 17 year old at the same age. I tried to teach my 17 year old how to pitch in one weekend when he first started out. I am now older, wiser, calmer, and more relaxed (tired).

One more thing - if the kid is not made out to be a pitcher don't force it. It takes a certain personality to want to pitch and you can ruin the game for the kid if you force a kid to pitch. Baseball can be fun and enjoyable for a kid without pitching. In fact you can ruin the game for the kid if you force him on the mound when he really does not want to. There is no reason for that.

I am having a blast with my 8 year old - I tell him all the time he is much better than his older brother was at the same age and he loves to rub that in his big brother's face.
