I think I have done this before.

September 1 is the official time that D1 college coaches can legally send you letters and forms.

I thought that I'd give a sampling with dates, of sons first letters, you can compare them if you wish as time goes on. Most important thing to remember, while exciting, the recruiting time frame for 09's in now until NEXT November.

1/21/2003 Standford Being an excellent player as well as an outstanding student you have been recommended as a prospective student athlete.

Most of the letter was about recruiting from their camp program.

1/16/2003 UNC Charlotte We feel you are an outstanding prospect for Division 1 baseball.

1/24/2003 Michigan You have been recommended as a future student-athlete for the University of Michigan and the Wolverine Baseball program.

1/30/2003 LSU You have been highly rcommended to us as an outstanding baseball player.

1/8/2003 Dartmouth A member of my staff has recently spoken with your high school or summer baseball coach and has identified you as being an excellent candidate for Dartmouth College as a student athlete.

1/15/2003 ASU You have been recommended to the Arizona State basebasll staff as an exceptional student athlete.

2/24/2003 Tennessee You have been recommended to us as an outstanding player.

7/1/2003 Mississippi State Greetings from the MSU baseball office.

6/23/2003 Duke I recently had the opportunity to see you play at the PG National Showcase in Lincoln and was very impressed with your baseball ability.

6/4/03 Brown University (hand written) I hope this letter finds you and your family doing well.

10/14/2002 Stetson I hope all is well and you are continuing to excel both academically and athletically.

11/13/2002 UM We understand that you are an outstanding ballplayer.

11/7/2002 UF You have been recommended as a future student athlete for the University of Florida baseball program.

11/11/2002 Notre Dame One of our coaches recently had the opportunity to see you play.

10/1/2002 Clemson I hope this letter finds everything going well for you at this time.

This letter was the only one in it's opening paragraph that mentioned the importance the junior and senior years, of GPA and college boards, class rank ,etc in being accepted at Clemson. It was also the most detailed recruiting letter he had ever received. Most of the letters were very generic, telling about their outstanding programs and NCAA rules and regulations.

His recruiting year began 9/2002 with very few letters coming that fall. His appearance in Jupiter (PG wood bat) that year most likely was why he received more letters in January of 2003 and many after his PG National appearance. Just to let you all know that you don't have to break the bank, just choose the right venues.

Of the above letters, three offered.

TPM posted an excellent example. There are many different scenarios...I am an '08 and I got several letters right off the bat in September from several big name schools. It slowed down until after Jupiter. More came after that, and then a steady pace weekly from the schools that had already sent info and a few new schools thrown in once in a while.

Getting your first letter is a wonderful feeling. It is the first time that you can perhaps see the results of your hard work coming into play and being successful. The ultimate goal is to play at the next level and getting these letters is the first step. That's just it, they are the FIRST step. Fill out all the questionnaires, send follow up e-mails, do everything you can do. Just know that these are preliminary feelers for the most part. You are still young and the colleges are not looking for commitments and all out of you as of yet. I went around and told all my friends about the letters I got from Vanderbilt and Virginia and Notre Dame and they all thought it was really cool. It's a great feeling, but just remember it still takes a lot more hard work to reach that plateau of them saying "I'd like to offer you a spot on our roster."
'09's, please do not feel slighted if you do not get any letters this month. My '08 son did not get any letters all fall and in the spring got letters from only one or two schools, neither of which are actively recruiting him. My son did not get any phone calls in the month of July following his junior year, but it looks as if he will get the opportunity to play D1 ball. A lack of early interest does not mean that there will be no offers when the time comes. Bottom line: do not compare yourself to teammates or anyone else on this site! Every player's situation is unique and unfolds in different ways.

Great post Infield.

The coaches at the Young Harris showcase stated that because the NCAA rules have changed that every D2 school down will now be waiting with high hopes for the "trickle down" D1 players. And they then said for all the players who don't see any or get much activity in the fall to not get discouraged. Spring time will be a busy time for them to shore up their rosters and for the most part will have a good idea who they want anyways.

Work hard in every facet and your hard work will pay off!
