Our son is certainly no Bryce Harper but he is a 2012 that has a long history of having more walks and more extra-base hits than strikeouts including high school, all Legion Majors Tournaments (Omaha, etc), 6A Schools State Championship and Legion State Championships and against current Legion World Series Champions. He has 50 extra-base hits as a freshman and sophomore on video, is an excellent 3rd Baseman and does very well as a closer against all competion. His 7.27 60 time is nothing special but literally 40-50 percent of his hits are extra-bases including all tournaments. Because my older daughter played Division 1 tennis and was an all-american after a few schools passed on her, I'd like to know what his chances are from experienced folks. Thank you

Welcome to the hsbbweb!

Based on what you have written, his chances appear good to me. If he is a power hitter, the speed won't matter that much but I'll bet if you get him in a speed program now, you can get his time below 7.0 in the next couple of years which is kind of a magical threshold number for D1.

The main thing to keep in mind is that coaches do not recruit stats. They recruit what they see. That is really the answer to the $64,000 question.
Watch the best players on the field when your son plays. Is he as good as them? Is he better? When your son goes to a showcase or plays in one is he one of the very best out there? If so you have your answer.

Does his arm stand out? Does his defensive ability stand out? Does his ability at the plate stand out? If so no worries. He will be just fine. From what you posted I don't think you have anything to worry about. And as CD says if he is a 7.2 guy and has not worked on it there is no reason he can't lower that with some hard work.

Good luck and welcome to the HSBBW.
When he goes to Legion Majors tournaments like Decker Omaha and has three multiple hit games that include a homerun & 3 extra-base hits with 8 rbi's or plays in 3 games against current Legion World Series Champions and has two multiple hits games with a homerun and double and holds his own pitching against them he stands out as does his arm and occasional diving or instant reaction play at 3rd.He still has some less than great games but I guess thats baseball.I'm beginning to realize that great coaches can probably watch a guy take 10 hacks and field a dozen batted balls with throws and know all about a guy to a degree. Thank you Coach May & ClevelandDaD
@standup..Based on what you have stated..There will be a spot for him in a D1 school someplace and maybe even Pro. Like any rising player who had great success early , we need to guard against complacency. Consistency and hardwork combined with talent (both physically and acedemically) = more opportunities. Best of Luck to your son in the recruting trail!

Guys correct me if I am wrong but you would also need to have solid academic credentials as well to go to a TOP D1 school. It seems that all the letters/emails we have received from interested Universities cannot overemphasize the importance of taking the SAT/ACT early and also do good as well as having a strong and challenging academic year during your Junior year.

Thanks Ryanrod23,
You are absolutely right. Grades and test scores are extremely important for any student. He is fortunate in that regard, taking all AP courses and earning state recognition honors for his earlier SAT scores in the Duke Tip Program. In our house theres no pressure but the rule is you cannot drive a car with less than a 3.5 GPA. It's amazing how that seems to work.
I know from our experience the HS coach was phenomenal in putting our sons name out there to different coaches. He has a lot of contacts as there have been on average 5 seniors a year that go on to play at the next level from our HS, ranging from JUCO to MLB draft. Letters and videos from parents aren't taken as seriously as the same from a coach. Maybe you can ask your HS coach to be proactive in getting your son some looks.
Probably need to target some schools and attend their camps and go to some showcases. Unless you go to Owasso or maybe one of the Tulsa schools you probably won't have a lot of scouts at your games other than a few Oklahoma schools.

There are some great Okla JUCOs too. I think the Kansas City area JUCOs are good, too and maybe have better academics than some of the Oklahoma schools.

I'd recommend the Kansas camp too. Lots of schools' coaches pressent. Arkansas camp - no schools there other than a Juco or two and maybe Ark. Tech.

Biggest problem is getting seen.
