As piaa_ump has stated, when the ball strikes the coach, the ball remains live, and in play. (If the coach intentionally interferes with the ball, the runner is out.)

So where should the runner be placed?
When a thrown ball goes out of play, runners are awarded bases. There are two aspects to this:
1) The number of bases awarded.
2) From which base is the award made.

1) If any fielder (including a pitcher if he isn't in contact) throws the ball out of play, the award is always 2 bases. If a pitcher in contact with the rubber pitches or throws the ball out of play, the runner(s) are awarded 1 base.

2) If the throw is the first play by an infielder on a batted ball, the award is made from time of the pitch, unless all runners (including B/R) have advanced at least one base at the time of the throw.

For all other throws, the award is from the time of the throw.

One wrinkle: In FED, a runner who was returning to touch a base when the ball became dead gets an award from the time of the pitch.
