Ok, so I'm back.

Here is the situation-

No scholarship at a mid-major D1. However, was heavily recruited by this school. Big kid, mid-upper 8's touching 90. Good grades in college and hs.

I signed an 'intent to enroll' last year, and was "greyshirted," and encouraged to stay in school and watch the spring, come back next year. However, I cannot afford this school, without scholarship (it was agreed I would be on placed on scholarship once the spring term began and I was on the team, now they will not grant it). Also, it's not as great as I thought it would be. Clearly the team is having some problems and according to those in the know, the pitching coach will be leaving in May.

I am thinking a switch to something closer to home might be in the works if possible...Ivy/Patriot League. Also not opposed to staying out West if it's the right fit.

Can I send email, call, or otherwise communicate with other coaches (D1 or D3)? Can I go on an official or unofficial at another school (D1 or D3)? Do I need a release even though I never signed an NLI?

Thank you

Welcome back:

When you say greyshirted I take that to mean you are now enrolled and are taking less than 12 units. Is this correct?

If you have not signed an NLI then, as far as I know, you are not contracted to the school, athletically at least.

I would call Rick at Informed athlete and ask him. He may pop in here and see this but like I posted before make sure you are getting informed answers.

Whatnext96,

When you say you were recruited, what do you mean?  It matters because, if you meet any of the criteria for a recruited athlete (they gave you an official visit, had off-campus contact with you or your parents, initiated more than one phone call with your or your parents), you would have to sit out for a year when you transfer to a D1. Also, you would need permission before contacting other schools about transferring.

I recommend you download the NCAA's transfer guide and refer specific questions to Rick at Informed Athlete.

Best wishes,

Ok.  That means the earliest you can play for another D1 is spring of 2016 if you transfer at the end of this semester or spring of 2017 if you transfer at the end of the spring semester.

Next question to answer is where you stand with regard to the five year clock.  You have five years to play four competitive seasons from the time you first enroll as a full time college student.  Were you at any time a full time student at your current school this semester?

WhatNext96, to answer your specific questions, we do need to know what you mean by "greyshirted", as BOF asked.  If you're currently a full-time student at your school and have been a member of the team practicing this Fall, you will need a release, or "permission to contact" other schools, before coaches at other four-year colleges can talk with you about a possible transfer.  This is true even for an unrecruited walk-on.

Also, Swampboy is absolutely correct on the earliest you can play at another DI school based on the info you've provided.  By the way, thanks to BOF and Swampboy for the recommendations!

WhatNext,

Can you provide actual dates to clarify where you stand eligibility wise with regards to the allowable 5 years to play 4?

I interpret your post to indicate  you started Fall of 2013 at this D1 school.  Is that correct?  Did you carry a full 12 hour load each semester?

This information is important, since the guidance would likely vary whether you have 3 years of current eligibility left, or 2 years.
