Son went to a D1 showcase this weekend and the coach gave a talk on recruiting. He told a couple of recruiting stories that I thought were pretty humorous. He told of emails he gets that make it sound like the recruit would do anything to play for his program. Then he notices a couple of dozen coaches' names in the "To:" box, meaning the email is merely a mass mailing. He also gets emails and letters from prospects who say they're dying to become a __________ (fill in the blank: Longhorn, Owl, Red Raider, etc.). The only problem? It's not the proper mascot for the school they're writing to! I don't think we would be foolish enough to do any of the above (especially after reading HSBBW), but perhaps it will provide a little comic relief for the evening!

The dates in this calendar reflect the application of Bylaw 30.11 at the time of publication but are subject to change per Constitution 5.2.3.1 or if certain dates (e.g., National Letter of Intent signing dates) are altered.
(a) August 1-31, 2006: Contact/Evaluation Period
(b) September 1-14, 2006: Quiet Period
(c) September 15 through November 5, 2006: Contact/Evaluation Period
(d) November 6-9, 2006: Dead Period
(e) November 10, 2006, through February 28, 2007, [except for (1) below]: (1) January 4 (12:01 a.m.) through January 8, 2007, (12:01 a.m.): Quiet Period Dead Period

It's a way of advertising to make coaching staff some much needed extra money. The coaching world might compete during season but is a brotherhood in off season. You will realize this as your sons go thru the recruiting stages. Save your money or spend it on your player identified weaknesses.
Off season is what going to make or brake him for the following recruiting year.

This is what I'm afraid of. Throwing away good money after bad.

I was thinking about having my son attend some of these "Prospect Camps" and possibly a showcase this winter, but after what I've read here...maybe I should just spend my money elsewhere.

Is it worth it to attend these events?
