UZI
WEAVERVILLE — A Buncombe County youth sports association shut down a raffle offering an Uzi submachine gun as the prize, the league’s commissioner said Tuesday.

Hmmmm, we are a fun loving bunch here in WNC, but this was a "What was I thinkin!!???" They actually had a flyer, with a pic of the UZI across the front!

In WI they still raffle guns all the time, not uzis but shotguns and rifles. Not long ago I can remember selling and buying guns at garage sales. Most kids get their hunters safety permit before a library card. While the Uzi is a stretch, in my neck of the woods the concept is not that unusual.
Like RZ1 said, we too have raffles all the time for long guns out here in California, but only at Ducks Unlimited or California Waterfowl Assoc. fundraisers, events like that. We'd never raffle a firearm for a youth sports program, unless it was hunting related.

Our school's baseball parents needed to raise money last year to replace our varsity infield, so we raffled off a Mercedes Benz. Cleared over $20K for the new infield...and then the coach blew the money on a bunch of other things and not a dollar went for it's intended purpose. And he probably wonders why his program raised no money this year through parent volunteers.
