I am getting back into baseball for the first time in 8 years. I never pitched in highschool but I really want to pitch in college. What are some "must have" pitches I should try to learn to be successful at this level. Thanks
I have pitched all 4 years of high school, and I was recruited by a lot of D3, smaller schools. I'm not sure what level you want to play at, but I would assume this level. I watched quite a few games at the D3 level, and I would suggest : a decent fastball that you can LOCATE well, a good change-up, and a curve ball that you can throw for a ball, and a strike. In my opinion to be succesful at that level, you dont need anything more then that.
I would also suggest going out and buying John Bagonzi's book on pitching. It's got a lot of good, basic info to refresh your memory - grips, mechanics, mental approach, etc. Also, visit WebBall and check out their excellent Pitching section. Good luck!!
I've been throwing a little bit over the last couple weeks against a net that I bought. Nothing too hard, just about 20 min of throwing every few days.
Physical Shape......well I could use some work as far as conditioning...My weight and all is fine, probably need some strength work and along those lines
Just play catch. Start short and throw lightly maybe 50ft. at 1/3 strength. Do that the first few times. Then the next few times move back 20 ft. Then keep moving back till it's not quite long toss, but almost. Then move back in to 50ft. but throw at half strength. Do the same circuit. Then the same circuit again at 3/4 strength. Then long toss. Basically just build up throwing speed and distance. Try that. If you can find some weights or a resistance tube that would help too. Don't forget to stretch.
