GED10 prefers the intermediate sized shinguards and the smallest chest protector he can get away with.

Before going to a cap and mask, he wore a youth sized hockey mask to stay as lite as possible. The adult sized "LORD HELMET" version was huge!

The pro style mask and cap both have the NOCSAE seal, so no issues with them yet. But, I am sure it will come up sooner or later.

Also, no KNEE savers on his shinguards.

What gear do you/your catches prefer?

GED, what age is your son?

I wore an adult goalie-style mask, I don't know what size the shinguards were or the chest protector. I preferred the chest protector to be snug. I also wore the knee savers from 8th grade until after my senior year when I hung up the cleats.
He turned 16 last month. He's 6'0 and 180lbs. He wore knee savers until his freshman year.

I would guess it will come up sooner if Texas plays under the National Federation of High Schools (FED) rules.

FED rules require the catcher to wear a mask/helmet combination offering double ear protection or a hockey style helmet. A catchers helmet or mask/helmet combination must be NOCSAE approved. The old school type backwards helmet and facemask are not NOCSAE approved since they cannot be tested together as a unit. Also, it does not provide the required double ear protection.

17 (6' 1", 200) prefers All-Star gear, including the hockey mask, and gets the longest shin guards available. Also no knee savers.

First pre-season game in about 2 hours, senior season.

For some reason, he has tried the largest easton guards and they just do not fit correctly, must be his long shins! The large pro all star type that Veritek wears fits 17 to a tee. The top section of the eastons kind of stuck up in the air and did not mold to the start of his thigh like they should.

Game was a pitcher's duel. I think there were 3 hits in the game total. We lost 1-0. Son had a chance to win it in the 6th, bases loaded, one out. Coach gives him hit and run sign first pitch - foul. Second pitch, suicide bunt sign, missed way outside pitch, runner from third out. Third pitch pure gas swinging strike three. I would have much preferred letting 17 take three hacks without playing the hit and run and sac game, but we have to be able to play small ball in our area as there is such good pitching.

We will live to play another day, preseason games sometimes are best that are adversity type games, makes the kids work harder and want it more.

Good luck to your son GED, he seems like an animal.

17 - Sorry about the loss! You're right, sometimes I would like to see them go guns-up and their best pitcher has to beat your best hitter. I do understand the thought process though, playing percentages, and all that. It is, what it is. But sometimes you just gotta let 'em play.

We had a coach from a panhandle school challenge the cap/mask at our scrimmage yesterday. The umpires ruled it legal since both have the NOCSAE seal. So we'll see at the first tournament at the end of this week.
