This may seem like a dumb question but here goes. My 2014 son will have his first unofficial visit this weekend at a very good D1 school. He will be visiting with the head coach. My question is how should he dress to meet the coach? Is it casual? My thinking is khaki shorts and a polo shirt but most of the time the coaches see the kids in shorts and a baseball shirt. He obviously wants to make the right impression.

On the visits that my 2013 went on I always made sure he had on nice pressed khaki pants, no jeans, a polo type shirt, or button down, and clean sneakers or shoes. I also made sure his hair was neat and trimmed. I tried to explain that it was like he was going on an interview and would be important for him to make a good impression. Great advise to leave the cell phone in the car.

More importantly, make sure he has done his homework on the program, the school etc and have him practice some canned questions. It is important that the coach sees that he is interested in the school and his program.

As difficult as it is, and is was very difficult for me, let you son ask all the questions and have the dialog with the coach. When we did our campus tours my wife and I would be just a step or two behind them so they could talk.
Agree with the others: polo shirt is fine (untucked is okay as long as it isn't too long), khakis and no sneaker or flip-flops (deck shoes are good). Some other thoughts:

--Firm handshake (but not over the top) and make eye contact with the coach
--Answer with "yes" not "yeah" with complete sentence answers better still
--Practice answers to 6-8 questions (why he wants to play there, academic interests, baseball strengths and weaknesses, and espeically his grades). When the coach asks him how his grades are, DO NOT answer "fine" or "good enough." Tell him what the GPA is and in (hopefully) college prep classes.
--Let your son answer the questions and try not to answer for him; however, if he is being overly modest or omitting a key bit of information, try to interject the information as inobtrusively as possible.
--Enjoy the process
I encouraged my son to also view it as a job interview...to that end, I did not wna thim to represent himself any way other than what he was...which was a dedicated HS student athlete.

He dressed in khakis and a polo shirt, was shaved and had a haircut....

I also echo the comments on being prepared for the visit with questions and observations regarding the school and program...knowing the record, and sucesses etc..........

I encourage you to view last years roster, know how many players there are at his position, what year they are and where they are from.......all info that is good to know....

This is not the time to show "personality".....and Im not talking about bright, inquistive, eloquent, mannerly and so forth, that goes without saying....its the "other personality" Im talking about...

I interview a lot of people in my real job, and when the interviewee leaves and the comments are "he sure is a character", 9 times out of ten its not a good impression....

Its definately not the time to go showing off your hip hop slang. this is an educational instituiton, they cant be represented negatively...speak like it...no edgey dress and show NO vices (tobacco use)

if you wear a hat, make it your HS team/legion team. travel team, local pro team.........but Never another college team hat.....

LEAVE the cell phone in the car.......nothing more rude than a distracted teen who cant get away from his technology......

Technology.........clean up his online presence....that means facebook and twitter....as an employer we absolutely go on these sites to see what we are getting.......alchohol use, partying, foul language used..PHOTOGRAPHS!!....all presents a picture you may not want seen or evaluated over your baseball skills........

this is not a dumb question and maybe his skills would overwhelm any of these things........but why take that chance....

best of luck....
