My son (08) just attended his first showcase and we were wondering what the "standard" is for top level pitchers at the high school and college levels. His average speeds were 86mph fastball, 74mph curveball and 72 mph change up. The showcase had a scale on their reports showing fastballs in the 86-88 range as a level 9 (of ten), is this a realistic assessment or do the top pitchers post much better numbers? I realize that there is much more that go into the overall rating (location, break and projectability) but at this point I am just trying to get a feel for what the standards are for top pitchers at the high school and college levels are so he can realize what it is going to take to play at the next level.

We have discussed at length here about the multitude of factors that go into players being successful college pitchers.

Without getting into the same discussion/agrument (I have expressed my opinion that there are unstated "qualifying velocities" for collegiate/pro pitchers, and would get some argument in that respect) I do not feel that I am going out on a limb to say that all other things being equal....88MPH if taken with a valid gun, particularly in an '08 will interest a great many recruiters and scouts.
