This situation happened in a memorial day tournament, curious what others would have ruled.
Runner on first, steals second base successfully, as the pitch is in the dirt and the catcher just blocks the ball, with no throw to second base. The umpire (as a courtesy or nice gesture) tells the runner to stand up. The runner mistakes this as a signal that it was a foul ball and heads back to first, where he is tagged out. The manager argues that the umpire should not say anything unless it is a foul ball and his words although well intended were wrong and caused our runner to be out. The umpires confer and award the runner second base, ruling the umpire made a mistake. (As a compromise, we put the runner back to first). Thoughts on this play?
