R1 stealing second base, Catchers throw takes SS up the line forcing the runner to slide a little early. SS recieves the ball and aplies tag but does a front flip over runner because of slide collision. during the process he maintains control of ball through tag and into the flip until he lands on his back on the ground at this point ball rolls out.. Umprie call was safe and explained that fielder must maintain control of ball after contact with ground. thanks in advance

Sounds like a proper call (and good timing) by the umpire.
Would you question this call if the same thing happened at home plate? Probably not. The fielder has to demonstrate secure possession of the ball by having control of his body throughout the play and showing that he can voluntarily and intentionally release the ball.

Voluntary release is not a requirement of a tag. There needs to simply be secure possession through the act of the tag.

He doesn't have to voluntary release but he has to be able to (show that he can) and that proves secure possession.

No, he doesn't have to be able to.
I think you are thinking of the NCAA rule here, where they mention the ability to voluntarily release the ball as an example of showing possession through the tag, but there is no requirement in any set that states that they have to be able to. As long as the fielder still has the ball at the end of the initial tag and its associated actions, the requirements are met.
IF there is a release of the ball during the action immediately following the tag, it must be voluntary and intentional, but there is no requirement for any release. While a voluntary release is always conclusive evidence of secure possession of the baseball following a tag or a catch, it is a requirement for neither.
Regardless of the umpire verbal mastication over the specific wording, I have no tag in the OP.
From FED: The ball is not considered as having been securely held if it is juggled or dropped after the touching, unless the runner deliberately knocks the ball from the hand of the fielder.
