Whats the latest on the high school athletic drug testing?

Last I read, it will begin before the end of the school year -- so, if not before the season then very soon.

Wouldn't be the first time in a Pirate dugout, would it?

The National Center for drug free sport will be conducting the tests for the state of Texas. They are the same organization that is used by the NCAA.

Testing will begin in just a few weeks and will include more than 50,000 students by the end of the 08-09 school year.

I appauld the state for finally putting this testing in place.

Sad thing is that there are probably people out there already planning/trying to figure out a way to beat the test.

does anyone know what type of drugs will be detected? i recently went to the doctor for a bad cold / allergy type thing and he prescribed antibiotics for the cold and steroids for the allergies. they really helped the allergies but would these show up on the test if our kids were taking them?

As some of you may or may not know, I am highly medicated for a medical condition. I am wondering if there is a place where I can find possible medications that might make me test positive. This sounds like I'm guilty, haha, but mainly I'm wondering for some sort of "list" that shows what they are testing for and what might be found in asthma medication.

Medical exemptions will be granted to students who can substantiate a medical need for a steroid prescription from a physician.

My son was sick and had a cortisone shot a few weeks ago. Last night it dawned on me that it could possibly cause a false positive on a test. I told him if he was tested to tell them in advance about the shot, but I was wondering if anyone knows how long this stuff stays in your system?

Noteworthy: 30% are being tested...

"...Every one of the approximately 764,000 public school athletes are eligible to be tested, whether their sport is in season or not.

To select athletes for testing, officials will randomly select about 30 percent of schools across the state. The schools provide lists of athletes in all sports. Officials expect about 23,000 students will be tested per year after the 2008-09 school year..."

From the Dallas Morning News yesterday, in districts already testing there have been over 5000 students tested with zero positive results for steroids.

Several positives for other drugs however.
