Using OBR: Line-up card has player's name correct but number incorrect. The batter has batted twice during the game with no appeal but when he comes up in the last inning with two outs the opposition says they are batting out of order and umpires agree and rule him out. I tried to find this situation in the rule book but gave up. Thanks in advance.

I hate when we get this question...It always smacks of OOO when an umpire rules incorrectly on this point....... however, to that end, the NFHS is the only rule code to spell this out clearly....

Under NFHS rule 1.1.3

The names on the lineup card establish the official batting order. No penalty is provided if a players name and number do not match in the scorebook or on the card.

For all other codes there is no provision, yet the only mentions of names/numbers is that the Names must be clearly indentified....

such as :

Jones/A
Jones/C

so those codes only put value on the names not the numbers even thought they dont spell it out in ether NCAA or OBR.

Its the names, not the numbers.....calling someone out for an incorrect number to me is OOO
"OOO" is a derogatory term that means "Overly Officious Official"....or "Overly Officious Officiating"

Its for an official who is looking for every opening to make a ruling.... or to fit a ruling into a situation where it is not intended or needed.... (calling someone out for a wrong jersey number written in a score book for example)

For OBR, players are required to wear numbers on their uniforms but there is no requirement that the numbers be listed in the batting order. It is customary to list the numbers as well as the names in the batting order, but not doing so or writing an incorrect number is not a violation of the rules. If the name is correct in the batting order then there should be no penalty.
