For NJCAA schools:
VIII.2.E. CONTACT NOTIFICATION: An athletics staff member or other representative of the institution’s athletics interests shall not make contact for the purpose of recruiting, with the student-athlete of another NJCAA member institution. If any athletics staff member or representative of the institution’s athletic interests is contacted by a student-athlete, or a representative of his/her athletic interest, from a member institution, the contacted institution must make written or electronic, and verbal contact with the initial member institution within five calendar days of contact. Contact notification will be considered made by utilizing the “Contact Notification Form” as well as a phone mail message if direct contact cannot be made. There shall be a 10-day waiting period beginning from the date of contact notification made with the student-athlete’s initial institution before any further contact of any type can occur between the student-athlete and the second institution.

So, a different school cannot inititate contact. If the player contacts a new school, by rule they have to disclose the contact to the old school.

I don't really know, but I suppose that many players who wish to transfer find a more or less indirect route to making contact with the new school.

Eligibility Guide

Also look at the Transfer Waiver form. You need the agreement of the previous school to play immediately.

JC colleges have no rule-based control over contacts from a 4 year school, because the 4 year schools aren't part of the sponsoring body (NJCAA or CCCAA, etc.) However, NCAA schools have their own rules regarding contact, and they are quite lenient for JC students.

I believe that a 4 year school may have an in-person contact with a qualifier who is in JC at any time, and have in-person contacts with a non-qualifier once he has finished his first year of JC. (13.1.1.2 in the D1 Manual) The 4 year school needs permission to have face to face contact on the JC campus itself.

Telephone calls, letters and emails are all OK.

There is a question of professional courtesy and etiquitte among coaches, and that may work to minimize contact, especially contact inititated by the 4 year school.

Son recently completed his first year in college. I'm SO glad there isn't another 1st year to go through! A learning experience for all!

His Private D1 JUCO is going NAIA next year. The tuition is incredibly high and with today's times we have felt a crunge big time in the financial department. It is not financially feasible for him to go back. While he could get student loans, etc. to help offset any baseball money, he would rather finish up ultimately at a solid 4yr program whether it's a competitive NAIA, D2 or D1. We (his parents) are trying to the best of our abilities pay for his school out of pocket.

He has one more year of JUCO eligibility left and is open to going that route again if need be.

I wonder how these JUCO coaches (if that is the door that is opened) finds out he is available to even contact....??? He is a qualifier out of high school and I believe eligible for D2 or D1 so that also is an option.

One would think that a 6'2, 220lbs RHP hitting 92-93 and cruises around 90-91 would be needed.

I guess we'll see this summer.
YoungGunDad, how about asking his high school or select coach to make some calls on his behalf to schools he is especially interested in? It would be good to put out feelers now so they'll know he is a possibility as they scout other players.

As a talented pitcher, he should garner quite a bit of interest. Best wishes to him!
Floridafan, yes he is playing in a summer wood bat league and we are hoping for some exposure.

Infield, we have considered asking his HS coach to maybe make some calls. His old pitching coach which played in the MLB really likes him and will be working with him during the summer. I'm thinking that maybe we might see if he might make some calls.

Fan...lol....while I have no problem with him going to the "left" coast it is my wife that you might have a hard time convincing!

Thanks ya'll!

That's exactly what I would suggest. One has to be careful though that they are seriously interested in transfering and make sure that any coach that is contacted by a middle man knows that present JUCO coach knows/doesn't know player is considering leaving. Most newly interested coaches will ask that the player contact them. However, you never know.... a new coach can up and decide he's contacting the current coach and WHOOPS! Not the way for things to happen! Smile
