I overheard some parents and players discussing how the baseball "games don't count" until April.  I asked my son and he said the coach told him that the games they are playing now are practice games.

Questions:  Is there an official starting date to tracking wins/losses in Washington State for baseball?  Is it different for JV and V?

I guess, in my opinion, that none of the games really "count" until Varsity.   That is if what we mean by "count" is that they help set up playoff qualification and ranking. Many, if not most schools in the Puget Sound conferences are playing a few non-conference games before getting into their league games,so that might be what you're hearing about.

Our freshmen play about half their games non-conference because not evey school in the conference runs a 3rd team.  And that's fun as we get to travel all over the place!  So far, Skyline HS, then Ballard. Tonight: Bothell.  Saturday: Inglemoor.  And so on!

Thanks Tres, I went to "maxpreps" (saw it referred to on another post here) after I posted and I noticed the distinction of "non-conference" games and I too wondered if that was it.

So I guess the next natural question is do JV and JVC have "playoffs" at the end of conference play?

Good luck with Ballard. Apparently every varsity player is a senior this year! (no kidding!) JV was heavily stacked with Jrs and Sophs ... I don't know about JVC.  But they are pretty impressive this year.  Fun!

Thanks again for your response - Nice to see the sun!

They all count, I just think that people don't start getting too concerned early on.  Sometimes teams take longer to gel and start winning games.  A slow start sometimes occurs, especially if the teams are bringing in a new lineup compared to the year before.

Sometimes you don't know the real quality of a team before the middle of the season.

Once the actual season starts all games count.  Non-League/Non-Conference Games count towards overall record and League/Conference Games count for League/Conference games as well as overall record.  A lot of parents take the attitude that non league games don't count and it is all about league.  To a certain extent they are right because it is what you do in league that gets you in the playoffs.  However, non league games counts towards your league strength as well as you division ranking which helps in playoffs as well.

Not every Varsity player.  There are two sophomores and a Junior in the starting line-up (including my son), but you're right - there are a lot of seniors on the Varsity.  Next year will be...interesting.

Hi Edgar,

Yes.  It seems you are right.  I know a handful of kids between JV and JVC (and a couple of V) and they were pretty excited about the V team - I should have confirmed before I posted.  It's very exciting for Ballard. Just looking at the website ... looks like some changes in coaching staff.  Good luck to son and team!  High school only comes around 1x.

Thank you - and to yours and his as well!

I hope my comment about how it will be "interesting" next year is not taken as a negative comment about the players on the JV and JVC teams.   I only meant it to mean we will be quite inexperienced at the Varsity level compared to this year.  That much is obvious.  However, as you noted, there is a good amount of talent at the JV level - seven kids on that roster are repeating that level (because of the logjam created by so many players in the 2013 class), and that has trickled down so that some kids who in other years would be obvious candidates for JV ended up playing JVC.  I'm sure at some level that kind of s*cks for those players, but it is ultimately good for the program and there will be wide open opportunities for those kids to compete for Varsity spots next year.
