Of all the dilemmas, that have confronted me in life, one now has caused me many sleepless nights trying to ponder the rightness of keeping my time consuming hobby of collecting information on Tennessee’s high school baseball players or moving on. There are no easy formulae to apply or effortless buttons to push that will make it simpler to gather the information, make the class listings and update, update, update and update.

My continuing stages of life add to the difficulties. As I look back to early, experiences of guidance where baseball-changing decisions were usually made on the run, I can firmly say the past few years of my life was happily altered by a passion for getting the word out about our Tennessee high school baseball players. Years later, we are all different people. For me the flush and passion has been diluted by the departure of many baseball families I saw every year.

Some HSBBWeb “old timers” remember that my hobby started on the HSBBWeb message board. I had an eight-grade son looking forward to high school baseball and some of our posts in those early years talked of talented players across the state. With my memory, I needed a list to remember the players I wanted to follow and one thing led to another.

It has been most gratifying hearing from college coaches about players they found and awarded scholarships from reading the website and for that reason it is most difficult to put an end to the “Top Tennessee Players” site. I did attempt to have a new site developed that would be less time consuming, but sad to say it did not work out. Those that know me best know that I cannot do something half-way. If I cannot devote the time to make it first class, something the kids deserve, then it’s time to move on.

I won’t name everyone, but thanks to all who helped the players by scouting, reporting information, etc. Also, most important, thanks to those college coaches that gave the players a chance to continue their dream. Maybe one day, someone will take up the banner to do something similar for the high school baseball players in the state again.

I will leave the “Top Tennessee Players” site up for a while and will remove the link above once everyone understands what is going on.

Wes. Man, how the time flies. I understand your dilema and appreciate your thought process in making this decision. I received the paperwork to re-up Joey for his second year of college baseball today and I was just thinking of all the help and assistance I received from this site and it's posters. So many pieces of the puzzle fell into place to get him where he is today. I really appreciate all the work you put into the "Top Tennessee Players" site. You have done a great service for a lot of players.

I hope all the family is doing well. This should give you a lot more family time and you deserve it. While I hate to see the site go away, I totally understand the time and efforts that you have devoted to Tennessee high school baseball and I am grateful.

With this, I give you a resounding WHOOHOO! applaude applaude applaude applaude
Hey Wes,
You have spent many hours collecting information and helping promote kids to the next level. I appreciate all the time and effort that you have given to your website. It has helped many fathers and sons to have something in common that they can enjoy together. You deserve a break but I am going to miss your website. Good luck in your new endeavors and lets stay in touch.
Thanks again, Larry & Tyler Porter

Wesley,
I wanted to answer your post a few days back but I also wanted to take the time to savor your friendship and appreciate the impact you have had on youth baseball in Tennessee before I responded. Your “hobby” of tracking all the high school players in Tennessee had to require many, many hours of work. You hobby was much more than just a hobby... it was a passion. That’s how you do things! We must realize that hobbies are for us alone...not for the pleasures of others. As Webster says: a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation.. Knowing you as I do, I know you want to accommodate all the young players but...you have to give it up ... you have to move on. Others will pick up the ball. We are all fortunate we had the time to spend with our sons and be involved with their baseball during their high school years. Those are the times that creates a lifetime bond between a parent and a child. Our sons have moved on with their lives and we all have to move on too. When the doctors told your son he would have to give up playing baseball and you had the tough job of removing his name from the list of top Tennessee players, we all assumed you would stop the “Top Tennessee Players” at that time. But you didn’t. You continued to help other players even as your personal challenges mounted. You're a better man that me. For every parent that had a boy play high school baseball in Tennessee, I want to say THANK YOU for all you have done. Please stop by when you have the time and share your words of wisdom with the HSBBW.
Your friend,
Fungo

If the game of baseball is so enjoyable why do they limit it to just nine innings?
HVol,
I'll weigh in with my regrets and understanding of your situation. I know what you mean about moving on as this is the 4th time I have signed on to the sight since "H" headed off to do his thing in North Carolina. I do want to again thank you for the part you played in getting the word out on a 5' 6" OFer. It was in no small measure what your board, your conversations, and your connections did for him and who knows how many others.....but time marches on and I know everyone has appreciated your efforts.

I know that one thing will not change.....everytime you see a bunch of boys playing ball in a field you will think of stopping to watch a while....maybe I'll run into you there.
Wes, you know what I think of you and your efforts here. I wouldn't be able to adequately express my appreciation for what you've done on behalf of our boys. But more than that I consider you a good friend. I completely understand your decision. I have a feeling you and I will continue to share thoughts over the phone and with the occasional lunch. As we've discussed, this is the first summer I haven't been watching Adam play ball since he was 7 years old. I'm looking forward to his completing rehab and getting back on the mound. But this has made me realize that there is a life out there away from the diamond.

I'm hoping you'll continue to be a regular on the message boards.

Thanks again.
Wesley,

Thank you for your involvement with Tennessee Baseabll. Simply put...you are the best. I appreciated your total involvement with the game and the boys of Tennessee Baseball. I just got back from a long weekend with Jeremy in upstate New York watching him play some baseball. We really owe you and Bob a big thank you for your help. I know alot of parents owe you a heart felt thanks. I am just glad you did not retire before our time. Jeremy enjoyed meeting you during his senior year.

Enter into "baseball retirement" as Bob H, with comfort knowing you and Bob are two of the GREAT GIVERS. You should be very proud of the accomplishment.

Please tell young Wes, congratulations and we wish him the best.

Guys,
Thanks for the kind words!!! Eek Smile Smile I've removed the link at the top of this forum and sent eteamz a message to remove the site. I'm not sure how long that will take, but it should go away at some time.

It's somewhat still a sad day. Big Grin I looked the other day and had over 200 emails from people wanting player information added or updated, not to mention the information I had already. Even have a couple of 2006 commitments that are ready to let the news out.

Maybe now I will have time for that long "honey do list" Roll Eyes #1 on the list is paint the inside of the house.
Wes,

I too need to add my sincere "Thanks" for your help and quidance. I don't know if you realize how much your honest opinions and your advice added to Kevin's self confidence and determination to go to the next step. We will always think of you and Wesley when we think of his senior year. I just wish we could have beaten ya'll one time!!!!
