Guys, I'm bored here. Where is everyone? Please bring Chameleon back...Quincy, where have you been? Is it because the World Series is over that nobody seems to want to talk hitting in here? Please, please, lets talk hitting! Come out from hibernation posters!

I've been relaxing and reading Dusty Baker's and Tony Gwynn's fine books on hitting. Two very different approaches to conveying the subject matter, but both are full of very enjoyable stuff.

Gwynn, in particular, pays homage to some of the important advice he picked up from TW back in the day. Gwynn is a good story-teller with an easy narrative style and lots of valuable advice to offer.

Baker, in association with two co-authors, writes in more text-book fashion. In fact, I'm guessing that Baker and his co-authors lost money on "You Can Teach Hitting" because it is a big-time production--looks like a classic, well-made text-book from the 1950's (when they didn't skimp on colored illustrations and lots of technical diagrams.) On of the co-authors is actually a mathematics professor, who I suspect was responsible for the "advanced text-book" style and the logical and organized layout.
beemax, I've sent you a pm. Regarding any posters that are no longer associated with this site, those posters made a choice and wanted thrown off. If you want to find those posters including some that have already made the move to a new identity on this site, just look on each and every other hitting site. They hide behind so many different invented personalities and agendas that it is shameful. I say this after using an IP program to discover the "identities" of some posters who made multiple accusations on this site and others using multiple personalities on those same sites. Good grief, are some people so sick and demented that they have to create two identities on any given site to attack others?

Nice rant.....But does not solve the problem....Which is that the hitting section of the site is now boring and devoid of content.. Frankly, I don't care "who is who" if they "have a clue" (Hey that rhymes!!!! Smile) and generate some interesting back and forth....

I think we have been through the purges now 4-5 times since I started here in 1999. I'll check back periodically to see when it gets interesting again.

Rather than checking back, how about adding something constructive here. Maybe something about hitting. There's plenty of good to go around when a valid question is asked. Start a discussion yourself, or hang around and give some insight when the opportunity arises.

I'm sure it seems slow because certain posters are not on here posting under various names and arguing with themsleves. It will pick up again as soon as the folks who are less interested in the comedic side of hitting see realize what's taken place. Or they'll all be back and we'll get a good laugh for a while again.

I say let's stick to some content.

Why don't we start with what lead some of us to Chameleon's site...Dmac's Tip and Rip observations. Take the observations of Dmac with Chameleon's video evidence about separation, and it shows that it might be worthwhile to teach some kind of barrel tipping. Not an absolute, but enough successful players do it, that it warrants consideration.

Dmac observed about the function of the hips:
1) provide power
2) get the hell out of the way and let the hands do their job.

Stretch and fire.

I like the hitting discussions, and were not all going to agree. But when things start boiling down to 3 and 4 pages of insults I find it ridiculous and extremely juvenile. In fact, anyone that hides behind a screen name and continously insults others has no sak.

I don't mind the occassional jabs & jokes, thats fun! But jeeze.

Someone in another forum was whining about getting picked on. My comment to him was, "hey, if you want to see what a real azz whoopin is like, go post something in the hitting forum"

I would like to see more discussion on hand movement in the load as well as the importance of the bat tip.
I recently learned that Chameleon was NOT kicked off this site, but rather placed under HSBBW witness protection program stemming from an ongoing investigation into allegations against PCR. For legal and saftey reasons I can't disclose his location at this time. Please respect his privacy during this time of hitting instructional crisis....

Nothing to see here folks.... move along.

OK, I have a question forming...here we go. Kids change as they grow. A little guy today might be a 6'4" monster in HS. The little guy is probably going to be most effective being a punch hitter. The monster is probably going to want to be a line drive/gap hitter or a power hitter. Does it make sense to take a different approach to how you teach a young player based on their physical makeup? How about a HS age hitter who is pretty much full grown? How do you teach the quick little guy vs. the big strong guy? I know as my son changed from average size and not much power to having marginal homerun power we tried to change his goal from chest high frozen ropes to balls deep in the gaps.

The importance of the tip that in loading the barrel out of plane, that by the time you get back on plane your hips have opened up (separation). Go to Bonds above and from around frames 29-31 the bat is getting back to the traditional 45 slot with the hips already opened.

The Tipping or barrel loaded out in front of the helmet can be a significant aid in learning separation. Top down control with the hands in charge.

See two clips of Rowand from the side and front. Watch the lead knee, and upper thigh turn out before the back arm begins slotting. Clear them, and turn the barrel. The tipped bat aids in the clearing.

Agree with you 100%, some people don't have a brian to think. They just simplely insult others and call others "troll" which in fact they are the "Internet Bully." The way to deal with it is that leave them alone. Let the fact speak for itself.
And he is still an all or nothing hitter. Has hit his way into a platoon role and maybe even a trade. He takes the big hack and hits it a long way when he connects. But he is clueless vs leftyhanded pitchers. But he is a big leaguer.

There's a better hitting site than in the hitting section at HSBBWeb. You have to be driven by one engine to talk hitting here. Thats a shame!

Kudos to you, isitinthegame you are correct.

Swingbuilder,

I guess I can see a little of what you are saying about Geoff Jenkins and how at this stage in his career he is somewhat of a platoon player. I guess I just take offense to you calling him an all or nothing hitter who is clueless against left-handed pitching when he is a .277 career hitter overall and .244 career against lefties. .244 is nothing to write home about, but its also not in the "clueless" category. IMO he has been a very consistent, middle of the lineup kind of guy.

As of today Jenkins is a .277 career hitter with 212 career homers and an all-star appearance. In 10 major league seasons he has made over $40 million. Not too shabby for a so-called "all or nothing hitter."

What is this rant about?

No Rant. I have enjoyed watching Jenkins. He has some serious strength. Sorry Beemax and or Deemax. He has lost touch with bat control and using the field. Something he did younger in his career.

As for being a multi-millionaire, can you name a big leaguer who isn't? Even the utility guys make more than a million a season.

When I spoke of Jenkins earlier it was at where he is now and the approach to the game he has now. Its alot like that swing clip when he was an amatuer. He contributed to his team not making the playoffs because of his refusal to make adjustments. Thats what I was saying. He has become complacent as a hitter and isn't the hitter he should be. Does he belong in the big leagues, sure he does. Is he to old or to far along in his career to make adjustments, not at all.

Hey Deemax....

It was impossible to convict me. There was no evidence that PCR exists in any mlb players swing.

They were given 90 days to come out with a new DVD....that is accurate....in line with....video of the best.

Because...they have been instructed to "match" the mlb swing, look for a revised DVD that will then violate copyright laws, as they attempt to "steal" the Second Engine concepts, but they will win this lawsuit because they will use words that no human being understands. And the grammar used will make it impossible to get a readable transcript. All so they can continue the ongoing snipe hunt.

There is only one way to duplicate the mlb pattern. It's already been done.

In other words.....the judge threw the book at them. He said they clearly violated the Hanson Rule.

The web site owners were reprimanded for censorship.

I was given $200 and an "out of jail free card"......so.......here I am.

I was listening and caught your question. I think it is an excellent question but it will probably get better play on the Coach's forum than here [that is fairly obvious by now]. However, even at this late date, I would like to take a stab at it with no fear that anyone will contradict me since no one reads much here that is not associated with a picture.

As a long time youth coach, I think you have to teach the very young basic fundamentals that are applicable to any size hitter. I would say this applies [again as a coach of a team and not as a coach of an individual] up to the highschool/legion/travel ball level. At that point [shall we say age 16 as a fixed point] I believe more varied advanced level instruction should be attempted depending on the differences between the hitters in two main catagories: size & speed. This is just me. Others may have other divisions or subdivisions of catagories.

So, as a coach, I could have 4 different hitting types on my team. There could be power hitters with no speed, power hitters with speed, spray hitters with no speed and spray hitters with speed. Some of the advanced level differences would include, but not be limited to, bunting for hits, situational hitting, run and hit hitting, two strike hitting, etc.

This, of course would not apply to coaching my sons since I knew early on they would be both small and fast. Thus, I introduced these concepts to them earlier than age 16 [along with the fundamentals I spoke of that apply to all].
