Once a high school player has signed with a college (and assuming he doesn't sign with pros), where do college coaches recommend their signees play during the summer following high school graduation? Do they like to see the player stay active with a showcase/travel team or do the prefer to see them stay around town, and maybe play legion (or some other local league) ball? Does advice differ for position players and pitchers?

I'm not sure how things are handled in other parts of the country, but I can say that I'll have players this summer who are graduated from high school and will be playing at D-1 schools next year, as well as players who'll be playing juco or NAIA ball.

The boys I've talked with have told me that their college coaches have told them this will be their last year to do what they want with summer ball, so enjoy it!
My son is an 04 pitcher now playing at a D3. At the end of his senior year he was told by his college coaches to play on his local Legion team and run, run, run. In terms of conditioning, they said not to start anything new for upper body strength - they would supervise a strength program for pitchers once he got to college in August - top priority was for pitchers to arrive uninjured.
Many college players are placed on summer wood bat league teams such as the Cape Cod League, Northwoods League, Alaska League, etc. Typically, their college coach helps with this arrangement. There are still many college players who don't have opportunities to play in a college summer league.

I'll actually be taking some current freshmen from a local juco and D-1 who can't find summer teams, and forming an additional team for them to play on that will be combined with some top level 06s. They will play some tournaments and lots of games vs. juco summer teams. It'll give them an opportunity for summer games they won't otherwise have.
