Finally got to see the kid throw this fall ... he and the other main pitcher have been taking it easy because they both threw so much last season and during the summer. Each threw an inning today and both looked great, with increased velocity for both of them.
We were happy to see that our son has picked up his velocity (a MAJOR goal this year) significantly ... "cruised" last season at 84-85, increased some in the summer, and today, was coasting at 88-90 and hit 91 with a couple of pitches. His slider was coming in around 84, which was also good. {He started using a long toss/bands program during the summer to supplement his regular conditioning. Since they have been working out, he and his main counterpart have both been using the long toss program ... and we believe that this has a lot to do with the increase that they are both experiencing in their velocity.}
But why the WHEW? Well, this is the first time that we know there were scouts in the stands to see our son ... specifically. We were hopeful that he would not be distracted by the situation. And, he did just fine. (He did give up a run because of a slider that went in the dirt ... the batter swung at it, but the runner advanced when the catcher couldn't block the ball ... but stuff happens.)
Man-oh-man ... first he tried to make his high school team. Then he tried to get recruited to play college ball. Then he tried to earn a starting spot as a freshmen. Then he tried to beat one of the best teams in the country, in Regionals, as a sophomore. And now ... another year in the roller-coaster as he dreams of getting drafted.
When does it get any easier?
But, to paraphrase PAMom ... isn't this heaven?

We learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp; some are dull; some are pretty;
some have weird names; all are different colors.
And they all have to learn to live in the same box.
