The use of whey protein after workouts has become very common (some would say a must). As most of you probably know, whey protein aids in the rebuilding of the small fiber tears that occur during a workout.

I would like to get some educated opinions on the use of whey protein after pitching. Pitching causes the same sort of small fiber tears, possibly to an even greater extent than a workout. It would seem that whey protein would be beneficial to the recovery after pitching.

I have not heard any discussion about this. Does this make sense? No? Let's hear some good feedback.

If pitching is considered a workout, it's a long workout if you're a starter. I would have to think that if the pitcher is following a good diet with enough of all nutrients needed that a whey protein supplement would not be needed. It is recommended after a weight training workout because of the fact of so much muscle being "torn down" that it can help with recovery. Now that being said, the proof is in the puddin'. Try it and see if it helps. There should be decreased soreness all other things being equal (sleep, work, etc.). Also try having it cold enough to sip after each inning (provided it doesn't cause nausea - but the other young men wouldn't mind the spectacle!) as then the protein is hitting the system as needed. If this doesn't sound good, can he eat a good amount of protein 2-3 hours before pitching? Then the protein will be hitting his system in time for the game.
