I have been told by my high school that as soon as our high school season ends in May I am not to coach these players, or even train them, again until the start of the next year's high school season.

As I recall in the States, a HS coach can coach summer ball and that there's a date sometime in early August that he needs to cease and desist.

Is there a national standard for these parameters? I'm trying to fight for my rights to keep training through the summer, but need some published guidelines for what is 'standard' back home.

Thx

Krak,

It depends on who is sanctioning your games. Up until last year in SoCal there were contact rules similar to what you describe. Coaches were only allowed contact with players for one hour during the school year outside of the official season. (normally 6th period in school) There was limited, to no contact allowed during the summer. They changed the rule last year so coaches can now be in contact with the players year round. The old rule was silly because the coaches would be in the stands talking to the “official coaches” on the field, who usually were dads or other friends of the coaches. Now the kids have their coaches with them year round and there is much more consistency in approach.

The CIF in So California is the sanctioning body. Information can be found here:

Yeah, I'm going to need to seek clarification from the Pacific District AD on which set of standards we're using here overseas. I was told I can only do 'conditioning' -- specifically weight-training and cardio types of things. No equipment, not even my own. This gives me just ten weeks out of the year with these guys and there's just something wrong with that.
I think its great if a coach wants to spend time
with players,why not.
But,I'm wondering how this summer will pan out since rumor has it that our hs coach doesn't want any player to play travelball at all.
It is common knowledge this coach doesn't like travelball.
He said he will have games planned all summer long
and plans on being with players the entire time.
I'll be honest,I'm alittle worried since we had planned on several tournament in FL,AZ and NC. A parent mentioned the coach said that those who choose not to participate..."Well, it was nice knowing you!"Now players will have to choose and it has nothing to do with official schoolyear baseball.
