A lot of fun last night as the pundits woke up and began to realize just how great this team was in 2005.
1) A MLB record of scoring first in 37 straight games to begin the season 2) Wire to wire in first place. 3) 16 of the last 17 to close out the year. 4) 11 of 12 in the playoff's. Only the 99 Yankees had done that.
Peter Gammons opined that only the 84 Tigers, 89 A's and 98 Yankees compared with this Sox team in the modern era.
Aside from all your bandages and dressings it's a great feeling isn't it? Another bag or two of plasma?
My thanks to you for helping make it happen and my admiration to you for sticking to your guns (and reloading them constantly!).
I know you received alot of incoming shots this season while you were laying down withering fire of your own...it wasn't pretty at times...but you NEVER wavered and must be respected for that...therefore I tip my dingy, faded green, reeking of spruce, luck o'the Irish, Sox cap to you for taking the hits and leading the Sout' Side boys to a World Championship!
Now it can be proudly yelled throughout this great land that yes indeed ...
Regarding that MVP award...I'm sure Jermaine would be the first to agree with you.
These fans here in Chicago and around the nation would agree with you also. So many different guys on this T-E-A-M stood up and delivered when it was most needed to bring the World Championship here to the South Side of Chicago!
Wow...never thought there would be a sweep this year. But the White Sox are definetly the "World Champions". They played awesome throughout the entire year. Just a complete ballclub. Pitching, hitting, defense. Can't ask for much more. They need to resign Konerko, and not much more. Should be in the hunt for the next few years. Great Teams win the close games, and there was none better than the Sox. Shoeless Joe Jackson can rest in peace now!
That third baseman not only WAS but IS something else. We're looking forward to more from him in the years to come.
Concerning the Astros and their inability to seize an opportunity I would have to agree with you completely. Making the most of an opportunity is the very essence of baseball and until any team can master that they will not likely become a champion.
Let's agree that all four of these games could have gone the other way...but they didn't for the very reason that you stated.
Your Astros are close but they need to recognize this shortcoming and 'seize the opportunity' if it presents itself again next year.
World Champions yes... except in the mind of Coach Valentine (ex-Mets skipper) somewhere over in Japan. After watching the World Series he thinks that his team from the 'Land of the Rising Sun' would take us. Interesting to say the least.
The Japanese have played our MLB's best, dead even over the last 15 years. The D1 Team USA has been soundly spanked each time they play their Japanese counterparts.
We'll see soon enough how the WORLD matches up come March.
My guess is that the US team will fare poorly if they are not ready.
As usual TR, you seem confused to the real issue at hand.
Speak to the issue. The Japanese play very, very good baseball. They play the game at the amateur and professional level as well as we do. They are not quite as talented, but they practice harder and longer. The result is that they make up the talent differential by playing smarter baseball.
They rarely miss a cut-off. They get bunts down 90% of the time. They run the bases with intelligence. They don't miss signs.
This is what fellow's who have played or managed in Japan (like Valentine) are aware of. The White Sox Vs the Japan League champion would be very entertaining baseball. The Sox could learn some baserunning 101 from their Japanese counterparts.
