At Northeastern Illinois University Baseball Field on Foster Avenue it was the Whitney Young Sophomores completing the Chicago Public League top two level sweep of baseball championships for the 2007 season with an anti-climactic win over Lane Tech 14-0. The Young varsity won the Chicago Public League Championship in a real nail biter 1-0 over Lane at Wrigley Field on Monday. But today, the Sophomores were too much to handle as they did their part to get thier names logged into the city record books. The Young baseball program now captures their "first ever" sweep of the top two levels of the baseball city championships. For Young this is a first in its history in one of the big three sports.

The Sophomores complete their season 23-4. The winning pitcher was Jason Ormond who put up a very efficient 54 pitch count no-hitter. This was a Three-Peat Win for the program at this level and was his second appearance as the back-to-back 2006-07 winning pitcher in the Sophomore City Championship series (Ormond was also the winning pitcher for the 2006 Sophomore championship over Harlan).

From the outset, Young's offense was too much for Lane to handle and the defense was especially solid. The 13 hits from Young were an abundance as the crushing offense from Young broke Lane early and two timely double plays knocked Lane off the bases when they had the good fortune to have runners on the base paths. In the fourth inning a line out to the shortstop Gabe Henriques ended the inning when he fired a 6-3 throw to first baseman John Schreiber, nailing the runner who had reached on a HBP.

In the fifth inning the second baseman Jack Cinoman, did his part to preserve the no-hitter with a leaping grab of a rapidly fading line drive which robbed Lane of what might have been their first hit of the game. The next play was a 6-4-3 (Henriques-Cinamon-Schreiber) double play which ended the game and got Young into the history books.

The bats were blazing early with hard hit balls which scored 4 quick runs in the first frame. Einebohn Caberera slammed a 3 Run Homerun over the Left Field Fence in the second inning which gave the Dolphins a 7-0 lead at the bottom of two innings of play. In the third inning Young went back to work with 4 more runs which had Lane searching for an answer.

In the fourth inning a Homerun by Henriques added another run to the tally board.

In the scorebook: Henriques was 3 for 4 with two Singles and HR for a total of 5-RBI's; Cinamon-2 Singles-RBI; Bowden-Double; Caberera-HR-3 RBI's; Ormond-Single; Boyer-Single; Kamin-Single; Schreiber-Single; Platt-2 Singles; Short-RBI.

Steve Gianon was rock solid behind the plate allowing no passed balls which at this field with its deep backstop is a guaranteed base. Young scored 14 Runs on 13 Hits and 4 Errors.

Congratulations to the Sophomore Head Coach Josh Locks and Assistant Coach Kevin Harris who really worked hard and showed they cared. They have been integral to the program for the past two years with this group of talented baseball players. Thank you also to Head Coach Chris Cassidy for allowing these two really "good" guys to work with our kids. They did an absolutely excellent job!

Thank you also to Dr. Kenner who took time from her busy schedule to be at this game. It means a lot to everyone when we see you at these big games! Also to the CPS guys who took the time to give their words of encouragment to the team during the trophy presentation. Big thanks also to Von Stueben for having such a great field at Northeastern Illinois University for CPS to use for its big games.

Young next participates in the IHSA High School Summer League. Many of these players will now be moving up to play at the varsity level.

Scribe,

You are correct and I will absolutely make that editing change. You are certainly into the proofreading details and I really like that in an editor.

However, for the season the Lane Tech Freshmen team went 10-0 and the Young Freshman team went 8-0. They did not face each other once so we really do not know who might have prevailed. It was due to the rainouts that caused Young to not get the chance to play their makeups and participate in a single playoff game let alone the Championship game because the Chicago Public League administration decided that it could not allow a Freshman playoff series because of the conflicts with the Sophomore and Varsity and the IHSA playoffs looming.

Not sure why Freshman baseball does not seem to get much respect regardless of the location, whether it is the city or the suburbs. These guys want to play too and an 8 game season just does not seem right.

The Young Freshmen baseball players were most disappointed with this decision which took away from them the legitimate chance to prove who was best in the CPL Freshman conference and have the chance to compete for a City Championship.

Fortunately, a few of those players were pulled up to the Sophomore team once their season was aborted and they got the taste of being a part of a great team and winning a Championship. So if you are claiming rights to Lane Tech having won the 2007 Freshman CPL Championship well then you are absolutely right.

I happen to believe that Lane was awarded something that does not hold up under closer scrutiny. The city format is that a single elimination playoff series determines the two contestants for the championship game. My son has participated in four championship series (two in baseball and twice in basketball both times versus Simeon) and that is how it works in CPL. After all is said and done, these kids just wanted to play baseball (win or lose) and for some reason that was taken away from them.

So this time, we should have it right...Young won the top two levels of CPL Baseball and now we tip our hats and it is Congratulations to Lane Tech for they are the reigning 2007 CPL Freshman City Champs!

CPL....I say let the Freshman play!

Lane Tech Freshman versus Young Freshman.

Rivalries are good for baseball and lets take this one to the diamond and decide if Young gets the City sweep by giving our Freshman guys a chance to play.

Let's get this one right!

CPL baseball....It's Getting Better All The Time!

Burning me round
filling me up with the rules

I've got to admit it's getting better
a little better all the time
I have to admit it's getting better
it's getting better since you've been mine

Mark,

I am a Frosh coach at Rauner College Prep one of the new Noble Street Schools. Pritzker our sister school was placed in the South Division at the Frosh level to balance out the teams.

In the South Freshman Conference Pritzker and Morgan Park were both 10-0 and they played against each other to decide who would take the So. Conference. Morgan Park beat Pritzker 8-3 to advance to the winner take all final. So there was no bias towards Whitney Young. It's up to the coaching staff to think logistically to get the games in.

The North Division was won outright by Lane who went 10-0 we ended up 6-4 overall for our 1st year but Lane was the only undefeated team in the North and it was understood from the get-go that it was winner take all.

Frosh ball is in the bigger scheme of things a farm team for the Varsity, who are instilling the philosophy of the Varsity Program. The fact that we have this level of interest in Baseball in the inner-city is commendable in itself.

We will not have a Freshman program next year, our school is too small so we will move everyone up to the JV Level next year and then Varsity the following year.
I also think it is commendable for baseball to be re-emerging in the city. For too long basketball has been the only game being played in the neighborhoods. There is a story in the Chicago Tribune today about a Chicago West Side Little League program being funded and becoming re-vitalized. There needs to be alot more of that and there is a long way to go on that front however.

I am not involved with Freshman baseball at Young other than as an observer and learning a few weeks ago that the CPL playoff scheme was aborted and Young did not get to play for the chance to advance to a Freshman Championship Game. There were disappointed kids and parents wanting to play more baseball.

That is a good thing!
