Wrigley Field was electric this afternooon as Whitney Young stopped Lane Tech from repeating as the CPL City Champs with a HUGE 1-0 victory! Max Freidman was the Winning Pitcher.

The NEW 2007 CPL City Champions are the Dolphins from Whitney Young!

Lane could find no more miracles in the 7th inning to pull this one out! Young held their ground with bases loaded and two outs as Lane's number two hitter, Adam Kubes was at the plate. The previous batters had hit a single (Quieles) and a Double (Bottello) before the lead off man, Colon was given an intentional pass to load the bases. Kubes was previously 0-3 and had the opportunity to pull this one out Big Time for Lane. But there was no rabbit in the hat as a swinging strike three sent Wrigley into pandomonium as the South Siders defeated the North Siders.

That was HUGE!!!!

Whitney Young scored its 1 Run on 6 Hits and stranded 5 runners on base. Lane was held to NO Runs on 6 Hits and stranded 4 on base. This was a well played game as neither team committed any errors.

This observer awards co-MVP's to Max Freidman as the winning Pitcher (7-IP; 0 Runs, 6 Hits, 7-K's, 3-BB's, 1HBP) and Troy White the third baseman who hit a Double to the Center Field wall, scoring Julian Kenner in the 6th inning which gave Young the lead. The play of Freidman and White was absolutely HUGE! Troy White was also the Gold Glove winner with two absolutely beautiful plays robbing hitters of their hits and making seemingly impossible outs.

The first incredible play was in the 3rd Inning when a Double Play off the outstanding effort by White took Lane off the bases. Bang Bang! White dove to make an unbelievable catch and then threw the runner out at first while at his knees after seeing that the runner was off the bag. His accurate throw nailed the runner for a double play as the runner could not get back to first base in time. In the 4th inning White made another outstanding play, recording the 2nd out of the inning with a line drive snare that had to feel like a dagger to Lane's number 3 hitter Grarbrel.

Those plays were Huge!

Also in the 5th Inning a routine 6-3 play off the bat of Kubes became a 6-3-2 as Young's first baseman Jim Clement alertly threw a dart to Julian Kenner at the plate to nail pinch runner Rodriquez who was bearing down to score the tieing run. An alert Kenner blocked the plate as the throw from the first baseman Jim Clement was on the money and the runner was out!

That play was REALLY HUGE and it ended the 5th Inning.

In the 6th Inning it was the Second Baseman Sam Clement with another key play robbing Serrano of a hit and getting the second out of the inning. The defense for Young was key to this win as Lane was unrelentless and kept on coming at Young.

Hits in the scorebook for Young; Joe Frahm-Single; Julian Kenner 2 for 3-Singles; Troy White-Double-RBI; Jim Clement-Single; Max Freidman-Single; Eric Tabb-Single.

This game could have gone either way, but it was Young who came away with the victory and their first Varsity Baseball City Championship.

Congrats to Head Coach Chris Cassidy and all of the players and coaches.

This one was HUGE for the Dolphins of Whitney Young!!!!!

Either team could have walked away the winner of yesterdays game......as the Sun Times reports in todays, May 22 newspaper (Chicago Sun Times Sports-page 83).

"As baffling as Freidman was, Lane right-hander J.P. Palazon (5-1) was equally impressive. Palazon allowed seven hits in seven innings and struck out five."

There was a lot of talent on the other side of the field and I am sure there are great futures in store for them all.

Oh to be so young again!
