As much as I hate the Yankees, I'm sick and tired of hearing how inappropriate it is for them to spend like they have on the Hot Stove this winter. This is America and Capitalism is working just like it's supposed to.

What some people seem to forget, is that we're not all promised a million dollar salary, a mansion and a Mercedes. (but wait, Obama will take care of that right?)

Anyway, here's Mark Teixeira's salary over his career (from www.baseballreference.com)
2003 Texas Rangers $750,000
2004 Texas Rangers $2,625,000
2005 Texas Rangers $3,625,000
2006 Texas Rangers $6,400,000
2007 Texas Rangers $9,000,000
2008 Atlanta Braves $12,500,000
Career (may be incomplete) $34,900,000

And here's Will Smith's salary for 15 of his movies:

Salary (Hancock): $20,000,000 +20% of gross
Salary (The Pursuit of Happyness): $10,000,000 +20% of gross
Salary (I, Robot): $28,000,000
Salary (Bad Boys II): $20,000,000 +20% of gross
Salary (Men in Black II): $20,000,000 +10% of gross
Salary (Ali): $20,000,000
Salary (The Legend of Bagger Vance): $10,000,000
Salary (Wild Wild West): $7,000,000
Salary (Enemy of the State): $14,000,000
Salary (Men in Black): $5,000,000
Salary (Independence Day): $5,000,000
Salary (Bad Boys): $2,000,000
Salary (Six Degrees of Separation): $500,000
Salary (Made in America): $100,000
Salary (Where the Day Takes You): $50,000

I don't hear too much complaining about how much money actors make. I don't hear too many people complaining about Obama's $3500/night estate in Hawaii.

The Yankees, for one, should be commended (did I just say that?) for not stealing taxpayers money to pay for their new stadium. The market will determine if they overspent or not.

So who's more productive? Who's more worthwhile? Will Smith or Mark Teixeira?

Look, I'm no TV analyst but I say the Yankees earn their money fair and square and have every right to spend what they want. If I'm jealous and want to earn that much money, I guess I'd better get to work on my swing.

I dont know about all this stuff. I am not that smart. All I know is when one team has more money they can spend on one player than another team has to spend on the entire squad something just doesnt seem right about that. But again I dont know about all this stuff. I do know that the pressure to win the World Series will never be any stronger. The pressure on the players paid this kind of money will be unlike any pressure they have ever had on them in the past. So good luck Yankees. This is a fact. If you DON'T win the World Series next season you will be tabbed as LOSERS , FAILURES and OVERPAID UNDERACHIEVERS. And its going to be very hard to live up to the expectations put on you. Much harder than being an individual on a mediocre team having a great season as an individual. Good luck your going to need it.
Who Cares How Much The Yankees Paid?

An increase in expense warrants an increase in revenue to maintain an expected profit.

$7.50 hot dog
$10.00 beer
Raise in ticket prices....who cares?

Back in the day you could attend many games
on an average income. These days, it is a family event to take a family out for ONE GAME after saving for it or dipping into the retirement fund!

This assures that a high priced player earns an average annual persons salary for one plate appearance? Bet some minor leaguers could hit too?

But who cares!
Will Smith can command that type of money because he is so entertaining, brings people to pay the $$ for his movies. His movies make everyone $$.

Baseball is a form of entertainment, and the yankees do entertain better than anyone. They have to do what they do to fill the seats. I heard an interview with GM one day, how they would love to follow the Marlin or TB model, but they just can't, fans will not fill seats to watch a team filled with young players learning the game in a MLB situation, however good they may be. I think that the fans dictate sometimes what many teams do. While some teams can go through growing pains, some teams just can't and won't do it.

I have no problem with teams providing good entertainment for their fans. The only problem is that good talent, doesn't always mean world championships or playoff possibilities. Chemistry and a knowledgeable skipper is much needed.
Don't watch Will Smith. Can't imagine any
form of entertainment there.

Been watching lil Tex since pre-teen.
My son threw bp over the winter to him.
Now that's entertainment.

Congrats to Grandma Marge & Grandpa John (Tex)
for raising a fine lad.
Sure will look good in pin-stripes for a while.

Not sure if the former Bosox adminstration, who
put a bad taste in the family over the draft, has
been overcome by events.
I bet the Yankees would double every players salary if it was in their contract they had to win the world series or pay back half their salary. If it is about winning World Series then the Yankees have it all wrong. The Yankees aren't willing to give up their image and marketing machine to win a World Series. The best players don't win World Series. The best TEAM wins World Series.

Well, the Red Sox have won two championships since he turned pro. I guess they moved on. Hopefully the Tex's can too. The former GM is the former GM for alot of reasons, including Tex.
