Most of these bios are written by someone in the sports information office of the athletic department, they put in basic stats and information and try to highlight the positives while including some basic stats. I am sure that this season was rough on the player.

If it is the ERA you are referring to, I can make the argument that an ERA based upon 2.1 innings is not terribly meaningful. Also, Charleston Southern is the lowest ranked school in the Big South Conference ..... this player's 2.1 innings were against Coastal Carolina, Virginia Tech, College of Charleston (twice) and Savannah State. At least 3 out of 4 of those are significantly more successful programs than Charleston Southern so it doesn't surprise me that his ERA against these schools is high. Also, the scores in most of the 5 games he appeared in were very lopsided, he may have been put in for "mop-up duty", not usually going to see a banner outing in those cases. I have no idea why his innings are limited, perhaps he was injured, perhaps they had pitching depth and they didn't need him much his RS Freshman year.

I hope this player goes out and has a banner year next year.

I feel bad for the kid too but if you are a pitcher and you had appearances then your ERA is more than likely going to be in your bio. I can't explain the "lone strike out" other than it was probably a student in the sports information office that wrote the bio. They were probably looking for a bright spot to highlight but I agree, they could have chosen better wording.
Generally speaking, college SID's (Sports Information Directors) follow a general template for website bios and game reports/recaps for every sport. They highlight the main statistics available and don't really put too much effort into a biased report. It's not a scouting report, it's an honest biography.
quote:
2010: Appeared in five games… Finished with no record and an ERA of 30.86… Made his debut on February 26 against Virginia Tech… Threw a shutout inning on March 17 against Savannah State, recording his lone strikeout of the season.

I agree with Rick on this one.

Here is how the above quoted item could have been written imho:
"2010: Appeared in five games including relief appearances against NCAA regional teams Coastal Carolina and College of Charleston… Made his debut on February 26 against Virginia Tech… Threw a shutout inning on March 17 against Savannah State."

This is just another aspect in a long list of things that shows why Charleston Southern is a loser.
Have seen and met this kid and talked to him a few times. He is a big strong lefty who loves the game and works at it diligently. Great young man who perhaps could have had a more positive writeup. But lets face it, he is doing more by participating in a D1 program than most kids can ever dream of. Wish him nothing but the best.

I agree, this player has probably gotten more attention from this than he will ever realize.

It's the SID's responsibility to report, but he is the one, with the coaches imput as well, to make the players and program as attractive as possible, but small schools have small budgets, this may be a student with limited knowledge on how to present the player's accomplishments, good or bad positively not negatively.

So CD makes a great point, it's not what you say or write but how you do it.

I like his version much better. Smile
