OBR defines the defensive stat "Number of double plays participated in" as something the official scorer needs to note.

Further, in 10.11 DOUBLE AND TRIPLE PLAYS
"The official scorer shall credit participation in a double play or triple play to each fielder who earns a putout or an assist when two or three players are put out between the time a pitch is delivered and the time the ball next becomes dead or is next in possession of the pitcher in a pitching position, unless an error or misplay intervenes between putouts."

"Rule 10.11 Comment: The official scorer shall credit a double play or triple play also if an appeal play after the ball is in possession of the pitcher results in an additional putout."

I believe the correct answer to your question would be that "6, 4 & 3" should all get credit for a DP in the example provided.

For those of you who have read this far, the official baseball rules (OBR) actually provide most of the answers to questions asked here. Our friends at MLB.com have them on their web site. It's a searchable PDF...

OBR Scoring Rules
I never understood the 'DP participated in' stat. Seems like something for the MIF's to relish.

I'll be working a Palm for the first time this spring. I'm an old scorebook guy, so this will be a major change for me. I'll probably be asking for help...

HS coach wants pitch types, locations, results, etc. Its a great tool, but requires a lot more focus than I'm used to. I like to chat, cajole, commiserate, etc. I'm going to be wearing my reading glasses at games this year instead of video taping and telling stories.

In typical DP(let's say a 6-4-3), who would get credit in the DP column......P6(initiated the DP), P4(transferred the DP), or P3(completed the DP)?

Everything brought up here is basically correct. SS gets an assist, 2b gets a puout plus assist and 1B gets a putout. How do you track just the double plays? There is a stat for pitchers called "Double Plays Induced" this is where total double plays for a game/season are accounted for.

I believe that I can get a better feel for game situations, trigger my memory, and identify my own scoring errors better/quicker by having the book in front of me to look over as a whole.

I will be trying something new this year as well though....charting Pitcher Effectiveness and Dominance. I found them net-surfing over the winter...looked kind of interesting to me.

Basically, scores are given to the pitchers on how well they performed in game/batter situations and counts. It's a pretty simple system, but yet one more thing to keep track of for sure.

Sometimes we (scorekeepers) try to do too much. On our team I keep the book the and download everything to a program called Ball Stat (www.ballstat.com). We also have another person who sits directly behind home plate. His/her job is to track pitch type/location. In high school you can keep it simple by goung with Fastball/Breaking Ball/Change Up and maybe a Knuckleball.

The person who tracks this type of stuff usually carries a binder with sheets that represent the grid of the strike zone. Pitch location and pitch type are noted on each sheet then given to me whare I can input them into my program at the same time as I input the game.

Just an option but I know it is way easier to have two people involved because its really a two person job.
I agree...I liked the application I used on the Palm...this was quite a few years ago and I was only scoring for fun, but I got way behind quickly when I was trying to track pitch location and type in addition to scoring...turned those features off and it was quite a bit easier...I would suggest getting a book with last year's games or a book that has several games in it and step through some simulated games to get the feel of it if you haven't scored with the Palm before...
I would love to turn all those fancy features off, but I have a job now, so I'm going to give it a shot.

Should be loads of fun tomorrow at our scrimmage where all the boys where black shirts with no numbers and we freely substitute.

No chance of keeping up with that without copying down the plan ahead of time...

Understand...I was agreeing that you should have one person doing the score "book" and another doing the pitches...

While it probably won't help - coach likely wants it "right" - maybe with it being a scrimmage you could simply list batter 1 through batter 9 as the "lineup" and work it that way...just trying to help!

Good luck!
