What happened to Coach Todd?
Heard he was not at game tonight?
The word on the street....
(Shaun Todd, has resigned as head coach of GF Baseball)
Obvious question...why? Repeat of issues from a couple of years back when he was suspended?
Threw a tennis racquet at a player of his and hit the kid in the face! The source I got the info from is from that area, and knows the program very well. There is no time for that non-sense. I understand that coaches get pissed off, but he acted like a true loser this time around. People should not keep quiet on these issues. I'm surprised he is not in bigger trouble.

He should have lost his job as well
NRBB - Agree 100%. The players cannot defend themselves from the coach. Only adults ...ie Principals, AD's and Parents can prevent this from happening. Failure to do so is nothing short of dereliction of duty to the players.
Maybe a AD or principal going down will cut this crap out. Maybe seeing someone booted from a 100k principal gig because of some yahoo coach will get some attention. A nice little lawsuit might get the school board involved.
Zero tolerance for finger guns or name calling for students but assaults by staff (coaches) by language in particular are routine. It seems like easy pickings to me, but I am not a lawyer.
Holy Cow....
That is crazy.....
No the coach did not throw at the kid on purpose. But heard that his actions leading up to this outcome could have fueled the end result.
Why? No accountability for what happens at the school? No sale here.
1st time out, OK on the pass. Repeat problems and asking if heads are in the sand is a entirely reasonable question. If the answer is unsatisfactory then action must be taken.
For example, here's a question I would ask the Principal and AD: In light of the problems in 2012 have you personally observed any practices or games over the past two years to be sure that behavior is acceptable? If they did then I can slide over to your point of view. If they didn't, or only went to 1 or 2 then drop them like a bad habit. Absolute no brainer IMO.
Make them all think twice about the next coach that lands on their doorstep for inappropriate and abusive behavior.
BTW...Thank God it wasn't a bat he was waving around. Maybe a cracked skull on purpose or not might change things. As if that matters one damn bit. Geez officer ...I didn't mean to run those school children over when I went around the school bus. Reckless behavior always ends badly.
Regardless of what this coach as done for the program, if he threw a tennis racquet, or any other object, and it struck a player, or even came close to striking a player, (intentional or unintentional) he should be fired and suffer legal consequences. If the AD and principal don't take the appropriate actions, they should suffer severe consequences as well.
So does this give him a license to abuse a kid?
The issue isnt whether he's a good guy or bad guy or if he raised the baseball program from the dead (no idea if that's the case). The issue is this individual's actions. If he doesn't lose his teaching job it would be interesting to know what one would have to do to reach this threshold.
I suppose the police will determine if it was criminal behavior by the coach and I really am not trying to be confrontational, only to understand the point of view.
How would you feel if the Music teacher after previous serious behavioral infractions involving interactions with students brained a kid with a guitar? Accidental or not. No matter how much they did for the kids. Time for them to go? IMO Yep.
I am certain if I was previously suspended from my job for berating a staffer of mine and then hit them in the head with anything I'd be gone in the amount of time it would take for someone to come get me. Verified accusation is all it would take to wreck my life. Why would these people be held to a lower standard than that?
Here is some older stuff that is in the newspaper.

Shaun Todd has not coached due to his issues with self control anger managment and daily degrading coaching style. And it finally caught up with him.On the bus ride home from NR he had a display on what is an everyday routine, except this time the real Shaun Todd was caught on tape and video on bus.Parents spoke out and notified Grassfield Ad based on what many of the players shared with parents. Why parents and scholl have tolerated this for so long is beyond me.Grassfield is wonderful scholl with very high standards so why the silence.Shaun Todd does not fit the brand.A few parents seem to have drank too much of the koolaide?? In 5 years how many players has he truly helped get to next level.Asked around. Playoff wins?? Enough is Enough
Well I hope the kid did not look for a way to get coach fired. The kid did not make coach do what he did..
I'm not at all surprised by this story. I witnessed first hand his outburst in 2012 as did everyone else on the Nansemond River side of the field when he lost control in the dugout during the game. the fact he couldn't get his emotions under control in the time that passed from about the 5th inning to the time the loaded up on the bus where he was caught on video tape should have been the only warning sign Administrators needed to not allow him back on the field.

The above information you quoted was an editorial comment from a kid. Hardly reliable.
The situation is unfortunate. Should he have been fired? Most likely. But, let's get the story straight. There is no video of the 2012 incident. It never existed. There IS video of this incident and it is clear through video and statements from the kids in the gym that his intent was not to hit anyone. He was working with the JV kids and turned to see his varsity kids horsing around. He turned and swung the racquet. Only Coach Todd knows if he wanted to throw it or swing it. Either way, it hit the player.
For the record, I wasn't there. This story was told to me by 2 separate eye witnesses. I consider Coach Todd a friend but he wasn't one of the people who told me the story.

Assistant Bret Lieberman has replaced Shaun Todd as Grassfield High School’s baseball coach for the second time in three seasons.
Grizzlies athletic director Matthew Puryear declined to comment on the change, and Kellie Goral, public information officer for Chesapeake Public Schools – calling it a ‘personnel matter’ – said only that Lieberman would finish the rest of this season as head coach.
Attempts to reach Todd on Friday were unsuccessful.
Administrators also were mum on Todd’s reason for leaving the team in May 2012. He returned to coach last season.
Todd was hired as the Grizzlies coach when the school opened in 2007. The team was 3-4 before Friday’s scheduled game at home against Lakeland.
I am so glad they move fast this time around. Sorry he is gone but you can't have that stuff go on...
GF won last night again without him.

Now that Grassfield is through the toughest part of their schedule, I would expect them to win a lot of games.
Them being 4-4 overall is a reflection of who they have played, not how good or bad the team is. If other programs at the Beach, Peninsula, or Norfolk had to play WB, GB, NR, and Hickory...they'd have a lot more losses too! You'll see when Woodside brings their undefeated record to this side of the water. (for example)
Flip side to this....maybe we'll find out how good these SED teams are. For the last few season there has been a general feeling among many posters here that the SED is very strong when compared to the Eastern, Peninsula and most of the Beach.
I think that might be true among the top 4/5 but I also think there bottom 3/4 might also be weak with IR and OS in the middle getting a few good wins. It will be time to find out how deep the district really is in regular season games that actually count for the first time. No more benefit games here.
Is Coach Todd Still a Teacher?
