Just saw a great example of why people shouldn’t mark runs earned or unearned until the half-inning is complete.

Boston has a runner on 1 with 1 out. Batter hits a ground ball into right field corner and F9 bobbles the ball. Runner scores on play, F9 charged with error, unearned run is announced . Next batter flies to center, runner advances to 3rd. Next batter grounds out to end inning.

Now announcement is made that the run is no longer unearned because he would have scored on the fly ball that advanced the runner from 2nd to 3rd.

That kind of thing can be done in the ML because the scorers understand that the earned runs can’t really be done until the inning’s over, and will go back and correct themselves. But for most levels below that, the scorers aren’t that sharp, and won’t go back and check themselves once they’ve marked the run unearned.

You should never determine or state earned/unearned runs until after the inning has completed.

The rule states, "...recreate the inning as if the error(s) didn't occur". You can't do that until the inning has finished.
