Hard to believe that they would have better bios, but programs do carry 3-4 many four catchers to handle bull pens and scrimmages.

Usually, one does most of the catching during conference games and some use two with lefty righty match ups if they can find lefty hitting catchers.

Your son will have to decide if he wants to go somewhere where he will most likely play or most likely back up... there are no guarantees though, as you know.... good luck (plus, nobody gives a rats you know what about his batting average; if they've seen him play they've drawn their conclusions about how he'll perform)

The existing stud junior could well be gone in June's draft, gone before your son would arrive (assuming he's now a HS senior).

The JuCo guy isn't there yet and may never be. And even if he comes, he too could be leaving come June.

So you're describing a team that might well have only one catcher in the pipeline ahead of your son by the time he gets there. That would set your son up for some playing time as a freshman, more and more as time goes on. And if he's the better defender, you might see the other guy shifting to DH or other positions to make way for him.

There's really nowhere you can go that there won't be competition to get on the field. What you describe here doesn't strike me as anything out of the ordinary.

Trojan-skipper, I was thinking the same thing, both these studs would probably go pro after junior year. Not sure where that would leave son. Would most agree to consider only schools that pay for "official visits" as a sign of good faith on their part? I believe one should step foot on the campus before agreeing to commit. His current school used two for games last season and the third man was bullpen/DH guy. So yes most programs seem to carry 3 to 4 catchers. Maybe they are considering the intangibles of a catcher and that is ability to get the most out of the pitchers, calling a good game. All we hear is BA, pass balls, etc stats.

Mildo, these stud catchers would be juniors when son arrives, they are sophomores now. You are correct about competition. Pop up has always managed to get playing time by his work ethic.

PUHD, I'm glad to hear your son is attracting so much interest. Good luck to him this year and in the future. I'm sure you both will make the right decision, you have to this point!

Being the mom of a catcher, I have always heard that it is a great position to play - because catchers have to be tough, smart, athletic, etc. And that they sometimes make great _________ . Fill in the blank with whatever postion the team needs a player at.
I of course could be wrong, but it is another theory until your son gets that answer straight from the coach.
I have learned (slowly, and after several years) to not spend too much time trying to guess what the coach is thinking, because I am usually not a good guesser.

I agree Mikamom, he does have a strong arm and could be a pitcher again. He has played most positions in his BB career.
