Yeah, I was born in Illinois, still have a ton of family there. My parents live in Moline, and a little while ago when i was talking to my mother, I mentioned that our baseball game tomorrow would probably be cancelled because of rain and cold.

She then informed me it was supposed to be 4 degrees there Saturday morning.

Sheesh, don't know how you guys do it.

Didn't know that just because of the weather,it automaticaly make's you a good ball player? I would take A Illinois ball player over a Texas player any day !!!!!! For example, Nicky Popseciu from Naperville, started as a Freshman,on the freshman team at Nequa Valley, did a nice job for them, and then moved to Texas, Flower Mound, and started on their Varsity Nationaly ranked HS. Team as a sophmore in left field.!!! That a boy Nicky, show those Texan's how to play the game the right way!!!!! Now is the starting ss as a junior.
[QUOHey could you call the National Cross Checkers and tell them that....because the last time I looked...majority of the draft picks come from warm weather climates..........The Midwest Scouting Group think there are players in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc. but when you look at the DRAFT SELECTIONS....it really shows the difference in where the Cross Checkers like to be.......WARM WEATHER....TE]Originally posted by strikes3100:

They didn't beat Texas A&M, they beat Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Lots of difference there.

Texas A&M is a Big 12 School, and if memory serves me, they are undefeated right now. TAMU-CC is a Southland Conference School that is just a so-so team.

So, let's not get all excited about a win against a so so school. I'd be more excited about the win against Dallas Baptist. If SIU wants some real competition, we can line them up against UT, TAMU, Baylor, Rice, TCU or Texas Tech.

Nick's a good ball player, watched him play last year. And as far as nationaly ranked goes, it's because they had so many high draft picks as pitchers....where did it get them in the playoffs? Couldn't even win thier region.

It's always fun to show up to my son's high school games and see 15 scouts in the stands. Big Grin
There are great athletes in every state and the ones in warm states have the benefit of more outdoor practice time. Not sure if the other warm areas have baseball class instead of PE like we do in Texas but that sure helps instead of taking badminton or gymnastics.
But where there is good there can be bad. Last year when we moved here I had 3 boys who said baseball was their favorite sport, I now have only one. Year round playing at the younger years may make some better but you may also lose some of your good athletes. My oldest made a very good high school baseball program in Texas without playing on a select team until he was 13 and only playing 4 months out of the year. I wish my youngest could have made it through Little League but the only option to play in Texas with equal caliber kids is select. I could list other good and bad for both Illinois and Texas but for what reason. There aren't better athletes in either state, just athletes that use what each state has to offer them.
KellerDad: As far as not winning our region, lack of talent was not the reason.
1)Texas has a much bigger population than Illinois.

2) The high school with the most D1 scholarships given to baseball players...in 2005...in the whole U.S...was Oak Park and River Forest HS in ILLINOIS!..and there were no cheapies either! (Texas, Florida State,Coastal Carolina,Illinois State and Villanova).

So...the next time a Texas HS matches that, let me know!
Keller,,,,touchy, aren't we....? If you will re read my post, I said Texas A&M "CC"......

We are happy for every win....be it a Southen team or a Northern team....Regarding matching us up with all the teams you mention, I don't make the schedule,,,,,I'm just a mom of a kid on the team who's just trying to ruffle some feathers and apparently I did a good job!!!

Sorry I made light of your Texan ability!

NRP Mom -

Have you ever been to a high school boys gymnastics meet in Texas? I watched the state competition that was held at Highland Park High School last spring and it was truly amazing. Most of these athletes are AMAZING on the floor, bars, rings, horse, etc. I have great respect for these athletes...they were incredible. I don't think you would pooh-pooh boys gymnastics if you watched a meet. It is not a popular sport in Texas but it is quite amazing to watch.

cheapseats,
I think you misunderstood my post. I didn't pooh pooh gymnastics, I was simply saying taking baseball class instead of badminton or gymnastics will probably help you become a better baseball player. I also have a great respect for gymnastics but baseball class helped my son more than his gymnastic and badminton class did. Just trying to point out the difference in PE class in Texas.

Agreed, baseball "off season" at school in the fall also helped my son prepare for spring baseball. It was not a class offered by the school but was part of after school athletics. I didn't mean to be defensive .... just supporting a worthwhile sport.
