I've seen discussions here about the recent changes several conferences have made to baseball and other student-athlete policies (like four-year guarantees) -- but this change, from the Pac12 news release, seems like it could have a pretty big impact:

Student athletes who transfer between Pac12 institutions will be able to receive athletic scholarships immediately.

Given the limited dollars and 11.7 scholarships each team has, can you see School A trying to lure a player from School B with higher scholarship dollars? Seems logical to me, especially to fill a specific need. And if a player who believes he's undervalued has it validated with a better scholarship offer, might it happen?

My conclusion, if this is possible:

  • Good for players because it forces teams to value them fairly each year with scholarship dollars.
  • A potential nightmare for college coaches.
