It was kind of funny.

He was right. Kind of like running around with Kansas and Kansas State gear on.

I never thought of it like that Coach May, but you are right. I've never said "SC" to refer to "USC". I usually say .... well, USC, or South Carolina ...

otoh, South Carolina was here before we even found the West Coast.

From the article... "During that era, the university in South Carolina had used "Carolina"

That didn't turn out well either.

It's well known that there are some kids that attend USC that are from well to do families. However, I think the majority are students from middle class families such as FOG's son.

In a somewhat related story...my daughter's travel basketball team was invited to a USC/UCLA womens basketball game about five years ago at Pauley Pavillion (I believe she was in 6th grade?). Prior to the game, we were given a tour of the UCLA campus and the kids were taught all of the UCLA chants etc...On our way home after the game, my wife and I asked if she could see herself attending UCLA in the future? We were surprised that she said No...We asked her why, and she said I'd rather go to USC. But we didn't tour their campus sweety? She said, yeah but one of the UCLA students told us that USC stands for University of Spoiled Children...and I like that better! Big Grin
While many of you may think of South Carolina as, well, "South Carolina," that's kind of tough to fit on a baseball cap. So the caps feature the first letters of the school's name, just like almost every other school in the nation does. Which program holds the right to a letter like O? Is it Ohio, Oklahoma or Oregon? Who gets to claim the T? Texas or Tennessee? I really don't see the problem with using the letters from your school on your cap. There should be no confusion, especially if you're using your own school colors.

The bottom line? It is all about money. Or else Southern Cal wouldn't have started a court action to stop South Carolina from using those letters, even though the logos are nothing alike.
catfish, can't help you out much, several of my relatives are USC grads. Others are UNC and NC State. I think I even recognize a Clemson grad in the family tree. (among other schools as well, but the point is they are familiar to me)

I've never referred to USC as just SC. I do see the logic in their case though. The two USCs are almost opposite in their appearance, and South Carolina is postal code SC. And if the postal service recognizes SC as South Carolina,.... It did work for SC... hohoho But seriously, can South Carolina the state be blocked from using SC. The SC may have missed a greater implication on this one. Who owns "State"? Could this open up a big can o'mess?
This is funny how each region refers to their team. USC(Cal) is generally referred to as “Southern Cal” or “SC” out here. Sounds like So. Carolina is called “SC” by the locals also. I am not sure of the exact ruling, but a different stylized “SC” on their hat would be fine IMO. I am not sure but I think USC (Cal) wanted to protect the interlocked logo.

The comments on the ‘University of Spoiled Children” is kind of funny even though it hits a nerve with FoG. Some of this has been brought on by the University in part propagated by the whole Reggie Bush (and others before and after him) with the arrogant flaunting the NCAA rules in recruiting violations in the football and basketball programs. Pat Haden is trying to set it right but the impression has been made and it will be difficult to change this perception. It is going to just take time. (I for one would be very happy to have my son with a degree from USC) At least in So Cal there is a very strong Alum and this degree makes a difference in the employment world here. (Which is why UCLA fans are jealous and propagate the Spoiled Children comments) I think over the next couple of years we will see the USC baseball program rise up again in prominence. (as it should)
BOF: Most people around here refer to South Carolina as USC. You hear some say Carolina as well (which sets up a different point of contention with the North Carolina folks Smile ). And I'm not sure anybody here is that worked up over the logo thing, except for not understanding why Southern Cal wanted to make a deal out of it. It's my understanding the baseball team will continue to wear caps with this logo. I guess South Carolina just can't trademark it for sales purposes. (You can tell I'm not a lawyer.)

Like you, I'm not big on name-calling when it comes to other schools. I figure all of us baseball people are in this together, no matter where our college interests are.

I lived in southern CA for twenty-two years. I know MANY spoiled children alumnus and the sons and daughters who are spoiled children who have attended USC. They have earned the nickname with their arrogance. They don't get accepted to Stanford, Cal, UCLA or several other UC schools then attempt to explain why USC is just as good if not a better academic institution. Their lack of respect for other colleges is obnoxious. To have them tell me their college is a better academic institution due to a few football championships is obnoxious.

There's a reason why opposing fans wave money at the USC band when they play the fight song. It's earned. This doesn't mean every kid at USC is spoiled and having daddy pay their way. But when I lived in the area there were enough to go around to make it obvious the reputation is well deserved. And despite of this some of my best friends are alumnus of Spoiled Children. They acknowledge and accept the reputation. We have fun with it. We all went on to successful careers.

I'm not jealous of the USC sports tradition. It's a one trick pony ... football. An amputee can count all the USC basketball national championships. Only one college has 100 NCAA championships.

When I was a kid USC was where the rich kids went and UCLA wasn't. Like all stereotypes there are certainly exceptions. The athletes are the most likely exceptions. Like many stereotypes there's some truth behind the stereotype and more so in the past than now the students at USC tended to come from more affluent families than the ones at UCLA. Private school vs. public school no surprise.

I tend to root for UCLA some of my aunts and uncles went there but I'd be very happy if my son were able to attend USC. It is a very good school and the students tend to develop excellent connections in the business community.
FanofGame I know Matt is very proud of the fact he is a member of the So Cal baseball program. I do know it was his dream to play there one day and he is living that dream. I do know he is a hel of a player and has worked very hard to be where he is. I know you are very proud of him and what he has achieved in this game. You have every right to be. So when people make the comments that have been made about USC dont let it bother you. There will always be people out there saying things and you will never be able to stop them from doing it. There are spoiled kids at every school. Your son is a member of the USC baseball program and playing at the highest level. Thats what really matters.
From what I read this morning, South Carolina will still be able to wear the logo but not trade mark it, which means they get no profits from the sale of merchandise with the logo on it. How this will affect the decision to keep it, I dont know. Based on how schools like to make money, I think they may go for another logo soon. Personally, I like this one and have gotten attached to it of these last 13 seasons

This is getting too politically correct. You'll have to complain to management. While you're at it call Geico and complain about their ad making fun of Elmer Fudd having trouble with the letter R. By your view of the world it must offend everyone with a speech impediment. I've made jokes about Jews here before and I'm Jewish. The only time I asked for a statement to be retracted was when it was a personal attack on my religion.

USC has a known reputation. I'll stand by it. I'm not going to succumb to demands for censorship based on difference of opinion. If anyone is offended by the way I made the statement, which was supposed to be mostly in fun, I apologize. But I will not removed my post. If one poster hadn't been overly sensitive in their response to my post I wouldn't have followed up with the post I made. Everyone knows that every student at a college isn't the same regardless of reputation and stereotypes.

No RJM,please DO NOT remove your post.Freedom of speech is a right, and nobody should infringe on your rights.

Where we live a little country area, not many go on to play at schools such as USC.My son has worked harder than many will ever know.

For my family besides my uncle who attended Stanford, nobody has gone to a school like USC.Maybe its not Stanford, and yes there are some very rich people. There is no argument there.

And for me people get way to caught up in how many national championships are won.I really dont care.I love USC.Its a beautiful school. We have been treated very well by everyone.

We have no money, we are losing our house, we are hitting rock bottom,so for our son to be able to get a degree from a school like this is a proud thing for me.

My son was told he would never play D1 baseball. He persevered. He got his dream. Is it perfect no.But he is working so hard to keep up with the academics, and working sohard rehabbing from a surgery.

So for me when I see him in his Trojan uniform I am a proud mom.I could care less about what people think about USC.

Coach May, I just absolutely love you.You are the best, and I am blessed to call you my friend. You contribute to this board in a positive way and you are an encouragement to many.Thank you for your kind words. We will hopefully meet one day, if not on earth def.in heaven..Hope Jeff is doing well.
According to USC's Financial Aid folks, over 70% of incoming freshman receive financial aid in one form or another to afford attending the school.

I've seen spoiled children at Cal, Chico, Fresno, Stanford, San Jose State, Sacramento, Oregon, Oregon State, Willamette and many, many other public and private colleges which are fortunate not to have the letters SC in their name and have avoided the easy slam.

Takes a lot more imagination to tag a Pepperdine.
