My son will be playing in a lot of wood bat events this summer. So used to the grips that come with a metal bat.  I know some prefer pine tar directly on handle without any type of grip, but are there some suggestions out there for nice grips to use or do yourself that seem to be common out there and liked by the players.  Thanks.

You don't see too many wood bats with the type of padded grip that comes on a non-wood bat. A wood bat handle is typically thicker (larger diameter) than metal or composite, and most people prefer a thinner feel in their hands. I suggest he try it without tape first. The tape isn't going to help much with stinging anyway. If he does want to try tape, he can use normal athletic tape (Dick's or any drug store) or even friction (hockey) tape which is tacky on both sides.
