Why cannot they hold this at the end of the baseball season, before winter ball?--If I am paying my players the money that I am as an owner I don't want them interrupting their regimen in the spring for this event---at the end of the season they may be tired but that to me is better than not being ready in the spring which is the case now.

I suppose the main reason for having the WBC is to promote international interest in baseball. It seems likely, based on the relative lack of interest internationally in Olympic baseball, that the games need an nationalistic appeal combined with big names in order to be successful. So that "explains" the format.

The timing of the event is problematic. Holding it before baseball season, as it is now, runs the risk of injuring an expensive player before he even begins to earn his pay. Holding the WBC at the end of the season (after the World Series, right? And not during the time that MVP/Cy Young/Rookie awards are announced?) would probably find the fan base already tired of the sport for that year, and many players would themselves be too nicked up, or already out of shape by the middle of November.

It's hard to balance the interests of professional teams--who are in the entertainment business-- with an international promotional event. However, soc cer does it, and very successfully with the World Cup. There's no question in my mind that the World Cup is an important tool to popularizing the sport. I think that the WBC is an attempt to do the same for baseball.
I agree with you TR, the timing is bad. I would rather my players get into a spring training routine with less risk of injury than playing in meaningless games. I don't think their would be any good time to hold this exhibition.

I suppose this event has more interest in Cuba and other Latin countries. Those teams always seem to enjoy beating any USA team.
My mind may be slipping so please correct me if I am wrong nn this.

I can't remember if ARod even played last year but it seems like I remember it being a big deal which team he would play for and he was adamant that he was American and thus, would play for the US? And I now see is name on the Domican Republic roster...??

Am I talking about the correct player or was it someone else?

A player I know has too choose between going to ST and trying to make the big league team (NR invite) or playing for his national team.

I assume the same is true for many AA and AAA guys.

It's too bad people have to make those kind of choices.
