Mom and Dad must be proud.

For context...it was Senior Night and they started a sophomore over him.
I thought the way I read the article he was a senior and he had lost his minutes to a sophomore so he was finally back on the ice due to Senior Night.
Either way my guess is he has the kind of parents who probably are in some strange way proud of their son.
Matt13 - I read that as well. I'll bet there were reasons (probably many) the sophomore started over him even on senior night. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say if that senior was capable of such a childish display on the ice, there is no telling what has been going on behind the scenes with that kid.
I was curious as to which team the fans that were cheering at the play were rooting for. I would really hope it was for the other team.
Maybe the kid has a point. He held the opposing team to one goal in 57 minutes. The backup goalie allowed the same amount of goals in the final 3 minutes.
There has to be more to the story as to why he wasnt playing more. Even if he went up to the coaches and said the other goalie was pathetic or something similar, he was already riding the bench by then.
Here's an update and more info on the story (when you want the real dirt, you gotta go to Deadspin)

Sounds like it was a season-long struggle that stemmed out between families too. Starting soph goalie was out with a injury, that is why the senior started.
Like BackstopDad said, his parent probably are proud of him in some strange way unfortunately. Had I handled a situation that way in high school (whether I had legitimate reason to be angry or not) my parents would have been anything but proud, and I would have had a whole new set of problems to face when I got home.

Reminds me of a situation we had on my son's varsity baseball team his sophomore year - but it was handled in a positive manner. My son made varsity that year and beat out the senior for the catching position. I think the senior only started one game (against a very weak opponent). The senior did get playing time, but usually only after the team built a sizable lead and coach felt comfortable taking my son out of the game - usually in the late innings (6th or 7th).
Finally Senior Night came. I thought the coach might at least start the senior and then sub my son in after a few innings, but no, my son started and stayed in the entire game. Coach later explained that it was a district game and we were in a race for a playoff spot and every game was critical. The senior's mom was probably the one more upset than him.
To his credit, the senior handled it with grace - never complained all season. Just came to practice and worked hard every day. Coach awarded him the sportsmanship award for his efforts. He truly was a team player.
The part that irks me is reading the comments at the bottom of the article. There are people who truly support what this kid did - unbelieveable.
Hockey is a different animal than baseball. It's even more so for goalies.

Ooohhhh, OK...Hockey goal tending is "different".
I guess this must be perfectly alright, then...
wraggArm - I'm right there with you. This behavior is unacceptable in any context in any sport at any time. The fact that his parents are not embarrassed by his actions is incredible. What a selfish little brat.

That's not what I said.
What I will say is this was a douche move by the coach.

What did the coach do that was wrong? I don't care how bad someone is treated by a coach you never handle things this way. There are so many other avenues to handle this that this kid could have done but he chose not to. As an athletic director this kid would never represent my school ever again.
I agree with coach2709 - That student athele would not be representing my school ever again.

I'm not saying what the kid did was right.
On Senior Night, you start your seniors. It's expected and the right thing to do. All I'm trying to do at this point is point out there's a great amount of context that wouldn't be familiar to those on this board that haven't been around HS hockey. I've only seen one time ever where a senior didn't play on Senior Night, and it was totally BS (and everyone agreed.) Unlike baseball, where you have to play a set lineup and work with that, hockey doesn't have that constraint. You've got a backup senior goalie? He starts and plays until the first opportunity to switch him out.
Matt13 the Senior did start and had 9 starts for the season. The sophomore starter was injured and this is why this guy started and they finished with their third string goalie.
I agree that Seniors should start the last game of the season. I've done it with baseball and put all my seniors in the lineup. I would try to schedule a weak team for that game so we still had a chance and most of the time they were able to play the whole game. We won all of them to my recollection. One year we had an important game last game of the season and my seniors who didn't play said to me they didn't have to start of play due to how important it was. So we had Senior night the next to last home game and everyone was happy.
This coach didn't do anything wrong and hockey doesn't have a market on senior nights.

Hmm...according to my source who was at the game, he didn't. Could have been mistaken.
Wow, what a respectful young man. If I were the coach, I'd say "Listen son, I know it's your last game and all, but that was disgraceful. Take off your uniform; you're not fit to wear it. Go to the locker room, clean out your locker, and get out of my sight. I don't want to see you in there when the team comes in. Tonight you set a poor example for our underclassmen. Your behavior reflects poorly upon the school."
If I were the AD, I'd make sure he was disqualified for all other sports. I'd probably say everything in the upper part, but add the "You aren't going to represent our school in any sport no matter how good you are. You have disgraced both your team and your school. Go home."
