There are a ton of interesting/fun places in and around the ATL...

I know I will not name them all but here is a start:

You will be playing mostly on the north side of Atlanta in the Cobb county area so around there you have:

Outside/History Stuff:
Kennesaw Mountain State Park - you can hike up the mountain and tour the battle field.

Lake Allatoona - boating, swimming, fishing, hiking. There is even a historyical battlefield there you can visit.

Six Flags White Water Park - it is on HWY 41 near Souther Poly University. You can buy tickets online for a discount....

Near Kennesaw State University is a nice Ice Skating rink and mall

On the West side of Atl on I20 is Six Flag Amusment Park

On the East Side there is Stone Mountain Park. Great place to spend the day!

Downtown there is the GA Aquarium, Underground Atlanta, World of Coke, Centennial Olympic Park and the Zoo to name just a few attractions

Hope this helps and you all have a great time next week!

If you have an interest in Civil War history, in the area there is a nice museum which might work on a rainy day. It is called the Southern Museum, located in Kennesaw, GA. Full sized restored trains, used in the Civil War, and a southern perspective of the how the war was viewed. Very interesting and educational.
Rafting down The Hooch is always fun (call Up The River Outfitters). Hint: do the tubes because that's what most the girls use if you catch my drift...the boys can thank me later.

Minor baseball is another option.

Boiled peanuts...introduced these to my boys at age 1 and it was love at first sight. You know you're hard core when you'll eat cold boiled peanuts.

Lets see...boiled peanuts versus scrapple. Had both, prefer cold boiled peanuts. It's a Southern thang.

Sorry.

I grew up thinking peanuts were supposed to be salty and crunchy...not bland and soggy!

Maybe they're an acquired taste.

Vidalia Onions, though...I'm all over those!!!

Early indications appear that son will be playing his Junior year in a town very, very close to Vidalia...like 10min away. I told him if he ever came home and didnt have a bag of them with him he would be sleeping outside!

Scrapple is indigenous to my area. I don't know anyone who doesn't think it's gross. It's the worst parts of a pig.

From Wikipedia: Scrapple is typically made of hog offal, such as the head, heart, liver, and other scraps, which are boiled with any bones attached (often the entire head), to make a broth. Once cooked, bones and fat are discarded, the meat is reserved, and (dry) cornmeal is boiled in the broth to make a mush. The meat, finely minced, is returned to the pot and seasonings, typically sage, thyme, savory, black pepper, and others, are added. The mush is formed into loaves and allowed to cool thoroughly until set.

Ick! Bring me the boiled peanuts any day! The spicy ones!

Another place - Fernbank museum has a nice IMAX theater. Also they do tours of Turner Field when the Braves are away. It's pretty cool.

Those are two things we'll definitely hit up. It's disappointing that the Braves will be on the road, but we'll have to take the tour!

Is there any other ML ballparks within a 3-4 hour drive of the Atlanta area?
Lots of good suggestions given already. If you play early then just want to get away, do a little site seeing and stay cool; consider jumping on I575N and drive an hour or so North to Blue Ridge or Young Harris in the North Georgia Mountains. A nice lake and the highest point (Brass Town Bald) and a couple of local great restaurants!

Enjoy...
If you wants lots of decent Seafood, reasonably priced and near the complex; head to "The Fish Market" restaurant on Sandly Plains, near the intersection with New Chastain.

Turn left and left coming out of ECB complex (onto Canton Hwy) to Sandy Plains intersection (a few miles), turn left and follow to restaurant on the left. You won't leave hungry.
Prime9,

Have to agree with you about the Fish Market. Big appetite is important when you go there.

Only thing is... The Fish Market we go to is actually on Canton Rd rather than Sandy Plains. Out of the complex to Jamerson turn left go to Canton turn left... Fish Market is on right side about a mile or two on Canton. Has a light house feature on the building... Can't miss it!

It's owned by the same people who own Marietta Diner which is another good place to eat if you have a big appetite. I also like the OK Cafe which is just directly off exit 255.

Lots of scouts and college coaches and some of our staff really like John Boys (all you can eat) it is on Canton.

The Georgia Aquarium is great. The beluga whales are amazing. Also don't miss the ESPN Zone in Buckhead. Great place to get a burger and watch a game. We watched the Home Run Derby there last year.

This will be our 3rd year. Can't wait!

agree on the aquarium.. one of the nations best.. had the Titanic exhibit there last summer
If son is a rising Senior and can still play at the 17U level, I'd recommend it IMO. There will be lots more college Scouts in attendance looking to see who they want to sign.

Don't get me wrong. There will be plenty at the 18U but most recruiters (I believe) will feel like most kids have already made commitment.

This was our experience 3-4yrs ago. It may have changed since then.

RR23,

I agree with YoungGunDad, try and attend the 17U if possible. Many of the stud 18U kids have either been drafted by this time, or are playing for their college summer program. My son had a great time last year playing with his team in Georgia. I enjoyed the atmosphere and southern hospitality as well.

We had a few West Coast coaches following us (his team) around, but there honestly weren't a ton of them that made the trip. Getting exposure for my son wasn't the goal, I wanted him to go out there and have a good time and see what baseball is like across the country, and we weren't disappointed. I believe his team finished 6-1, the only loss was a game that was delayed a couple times for lightning and the kids were out of sync.

Although I didn't see many West Coast schools in Georgia, I did however see plenty of coaches from the South and Northeast while out there...especially cruising around the East Cobb Complex. If RR23son doesn't mind leaving Arizona and the West Coast, he'll receive plenty of exposure from other school's, no doubt about it. Best of luck and keep us updated on your decision.
