Just got back from East Cobb. Very much enjoyed the tournament. PG knows very well how to run a top-notch event. Many thanks to the Fords once again.

A couple of notes:

* Having not been to East Cobb before I have to say that the facilities are fantastic. Even the HS fields that hosted some of the games were a bit nicer than most HS fields here in Northern California.

* Great hospitality from the Georgians! (Except if you're playing an East Cobb team Big Grin)

* I thought the umpiring overall was very good. Not much yapping from anyone over balls and strikes or other calls.

* The weather is a bit more humid than we're used too. Mad And my poor little naive California boy just couldn't believe that it could actually rain (and boy did it rain a few times!) in the summer! Cool

* Competition was a little wide-ranging - but the top half of the teams were quite good. Some very good teams did not make Final-16.

* Atlanta's airport is a bit of a mess - by that I mean not terribly efficient for the traveller!

For those younger folks out there attending USSSA or AAU tournaments this summer with your 14/15/16 year olds...this is definitely a tournament you want to shoot for in the years to come. Thanks again to the very hospitable Georgians and to the Fords and the folks at PG. Another great experience on the baseball journey.

Good friend of mine's team the San Diego Show, showed very well down there. They raved about the facilities, according to them only our college fields out here are comparable, and only a few of them.

Good teams from what they said, they lost to the Pokers of Florida 2-0, tied games 0-0 and 1-1, and won 3 games. Great competition for our SoCal boys, they did not make to the semifinals with their 3-1-2 record. From what I was told, it was the best event they had ever participated in.
Frank....

The only ballpark in San Diego that can claim to be better than East Cobb is PETCO....

The facility is GREAT.... they are comparable to minor league facilities... I prefer those fields to T Gwynn stadium....

This is the third tournament Allan has attended at that facility.... and it rates at the top of my list as best around. Although, for the 17U tourney they only let 12 teams go to the playoffs, and many 4-1 teams did not make it which was disappointing.

And the EAST Cobb umpires.... EARN their reputation.
Justbaseball,
I agree 100%, the baseball facilities and the High Schools are magnificent. No wonder they play such great ball! And the hospitality is truly southern all the way.
You think it's bad there with rain and humidity, visit South Florida in the summer!
And as far as the airport, once you accept the fact that it is as big as a small city, you got it made!
Pokers faired well, it was their first time in in this particular tournament.
Beenthere,
I am very tired and familiar with your sense of humor, but you are kidding right?
We were in Atlanta for the East Cobb Classic a week before the PG tournament and I thought the calls were pretty good. Fair is more likely the word, you don't mind the occassional bad calls if it happens to both teams. It doesn't always work that way around here.
Justbaseball,
That would have been a hoot! Oh well, next year in OMAHA! duel

Beenthere,
See my post below please.

This is the 3rd consecutive year that we've had unsolicited negative comments about the umpiring at an East Cobb tournament.

When are they going to learn?

Since it is a strikingly similar comment from a different parent each year, there might be some substance to it.

Happens all the time...pretty soon NO ONE goes to the "tournament".

The 17& under and 18 & under championships had a combined 148 teams. Well over 400 games were played over the two week period.

A Texas team beat another Texas team in the championship game of the 17 & under. A South Carolina team beat an East Cobb (Braves) team in the finals of the 18 & under.

The two top East Cobb programs "Yankees" and "Astros" were in the tournaments. The Astros are often the team that we hear gets all the calls from the umpires.

I don't know about other East Cobb tournaments, but we pay a lot of money and use mostly all college umpires for our tournaments in East Cobb. I can say with all certainty "they do not favor anyone". In fact, the "home field" East Cobb Astros were eliminated from the tournament on a mistaken call. With two outs in the last inning with the Astros holding a one run lead, there was a ball hit down the left field line that everyone claims was clearly foul by a good margin. The umpire called the ball fair and the South Texas Sliders scored two runs on the play and moved into the championship game.

These umpires, like all umpires, missed some calls over the 400+ games. It happens even in the Big Leagues. Not even the East Cobb teams that were eliminated complained about the umpiring calls. And these umpires tossed East Cobb and other coaches a few times. There were complaints about umpires being too argumentative, but none regarding unfairness or favoritism.

Please understand that the East Cobb Yankees and East Cobb Astros are two great programs that have won many national championships all over the country. They don't just win at the East Cobb complex.

If you play over 400 games, somebody is going to complain about the umpiring. We expect the same number of teams or more next year. I hope the same umpires come back again.
Beenthere,
Can you tell me where your original post went to? It was there, refer to PG's post and my post was in response to your remarks about the umpiring.

What I meant to say to you,was that I was very TIRED last night so not sure if you were being serious or humorous about the umpiring.
I heard NO complaints from anyone about last week's tournament.

PG,
Just got off the phone from one of the parents whose son will attend Clemson, she was in Atlanta last week and raved! Sorry we missed it!
