I had one in live ball territory the other day told him once, he did'nt move... between innings told him he had to stay behind the fencing....he did! Have you guys had this recently?
Yes I had it the first week of the season. He walked on live ball area during the game, I told him he needed to get behind the fence, he told me I was wrong and he had never had to do that in 25 years. I didnt continue the game until he got off.
When an official photographer shows up, either from the media or the yearbook staff, with agreement from the teams, we designate a media area in which he can operate.

If you ever watch the old Ken Burns documentaries, one fun thing to see is how the news photographers in the old days got right up on the batters during the games. Not in fair territory, but very close to it. No one would even think of doing that today.
I've seen a number of fields that have an area against each fence lined off for photographers - usually past the dugouts. As a photographer, I can't believe anyone would be silly enough to go on the field! OK, I can, but just because I realize that there are stupid people out there...
I've shot games from LL up to MLB (and football at all levels as well) and I've had umps who don't know me (or the lined area) come tell me I couldn't be out there, it was dangerous, etc. I stay in the lines and a simple conversation usually covers everything. I'm there to do a job in the same way the umps are. Understanding that I've "been there, done that" for more years than I'll admit helps them know that I respect them and the game enough to cover it and not to interfere with it.
BTW - only been hit by balls twice - both coming back off the fence...and both hit by my son!
