Doesn't the answer to this depend on what the next hitter accomplishes? I agree that it would be unearned in the next hitter makes an out, but if the next hitter reaches by way of any kind of hit, it makes the run earned since two hits of any kind most likely would have scored him from first. Remember, the passed ball only allowed the runner to advance to second. It did not prevent an out.
BackDash, my post only dealt with the question of assigning an error if a wild pitch or passed ball occurred. How wild pitches and passed balls count when calculating earned runs is a different matter.

A passed ball is figured to be the catcher's fault, so like jemaz said, it may cause a run to be unearned. A wild pitch is considered the pitcher's fault, and can never cause a run to be unearned.

Once again, turning to the MLB scoring rules...

OBR 10.18
An earned run is a run for which the pitcher is held accountable. In determining earned runs, the inning should be reconstructed without the errors (which include catcher's interference) and passed balls.

(a) An earned run shall be charged every time a runner reaches home base by the aid of safe hits, sacrifice bunts, a sacrifice fly, stolen bases, putouts, fielder's choices, bases on balls, hit batters, balks or wild pitches...(1) A wild pitch is solely the pitcher's fault, and contributes to an earned run just as a base on balls or a balk.

Is this a sacrifice.

Man on 3rd, 1 out. Batter hits it to deep center.

Base-runner goes half way instead of tagging up.

Had he tagged up he would have scored easily but he was suffering from a case cranial rec tal inversion.

My son was NOT involved in the play, in fact it happened to the other team, I am just curious.

This has centered around whether a passed ball is an error and if not does it still get considered unearned.

What if the situation was the same, runner on first two outs, and the next batter reached on an error by the 1b (misplayed a ground ball) leaving runners at first and second. Next hitter hits a single driving in the runner from second. Next hitter flies out for out number 3.

Is it earned or unearned? Runner that scored reached safely, the hitter who drove him in did so with a single, but he wouldn't have been in scoring position without the error in between.
