Following a GREAT deal of research, York has become one of my son's top choices. It offers his anticipated major and several other majors he may have interest in, they have a very competitive DIII baseball program, the campus is beautiful and only 2 1/2 hours from home, at a recent Open House we spoke to many current students who are very happy there, and we stayed for a baseball game and although the team has experienced a difficult season we saw an enthusiastic, energetic group play as if it were a championship game, I spoke to a few parents and they are extremely happy as well.

The only problem, the Head Coach, Paul Saikia, who I have learned is extremely well respected by his peers and obviously his players is moving to Administration and they have not officially named a successor. One parent told me they anticipate Coach Saikia's long time assistant Mike Scappa to get the job and they seemed to believe he would be a very good choice.

Has anyone heard anything more about this or York in general?

Thanks

The baseball facilities are top-notch. It is as nice a DIII complex as you'll find anywhere. Coach Saikia has spent a lot of time on it, and I mean a lot of time on it - almost to the point of being ****! But it is beautiful.

I have met Coach Scappa, and he seems like a good guy. I think he will bring a lot of enthusiasm to the program if he gets the job. To be honest, I'm not sure why it hasn't done better recently. I don't have any connection to the school, I just live in the area.

The school has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years - a lot of construction going on.

Perhaps the biggest negative about the school is the concern over crime in the area. The local newspaper just reported on a couple of incidents, but that might be the case surrounding any school.
The campus is well maintained and beautiful, my son remarked how everything looked brand new. The students we spoke to on campus really enjoy the school and I have heard nothing but great things about Coach Saikia he works his team hard and expects a lot.
Watching the game I saw players who appeared to be having fun, playing hard, playing together very good fundamental baseball with terrific communication and support between the players. I noticed they had 40 players on the roster with an enrollment of only about 4,000 students. Which is fine with us, no dreams of playing at the next level, baseball is only going to be a part of his college experience, and York seems like it fits all the criteria.

At first my wife was concerned about the surrounding area and crime but my older son goes to Rutgers in New Brunswick, and compared to there York is a paradise. At a recent Rutgers festival they had 4 shootings.
Hi-my son is the backup shortstop (freshman) who has been playing lately due to an injury to the starter. He feels very comfortable at the school and on the team; they are a great group of kids, especially considering how many of them there are! The facilities are beautiful and the campus is safe; the crime issues seem to be confined to certain areas of the city. Coach Saikia is a real professional, and we are confident that he will make sure that his successor is of the same ilk. Good luck with your search!
P.S. as to the success of the team, after attending every game, I really am not sure what happened this year! They seemed to be in every game, and just come up short alot of the time. Keep in mind that it is definitely one of the most competitive conferences in the country; almost every team was ranked or recieved votes for the top 25 during this season...
