Over the years there have been many posts on this board about young players sitting the first year or two in college. Still the norm I am sure.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't remember so many freshmen playing key roles on so many CWS teams in the past. So many freshmen pitchers, shortstops, center fielders etc.

We are seeing some very good young players these past few weeks.

Good post but a few things to think about.

Many of these young players were top prospects in their HS class. Many of these teams lose players early to the draft, having to replace players with incoming freshman. Some of those players may be redshirt freshman without checking rosters.

As always, the best players play, regardless of class.

There is normally a huge difference in maturity and talent between a high school freshman and a high school senior. That's not the case in college. Talent and ability differences are almost indistinguishable but some maturity differences do exist in college but they too are not nearly as great. Understand too that the majority of the BEST college baseball players NEVER play as college seniors. They were drafted after their junior year of college and turned pro BEFORE their senior year. However only a few of the VERY BEST high school seniors turn pro with the majority of the best playing as college freshmen. So it's not uncommon to see highly talented freshmen on the roster far out number the highly talented seniors.

Here's an example of where talent/maturity came into play in the CWS:
The Stanford coach started a freshman on the mound in the CWS and saved the senior for when the pressure built. I thought all three did their job quite well! (coach too)
