My Cardinals pretty much stood pat, although we lost a couple of pitchers and we may even miss Suppan. (Interestingly, his most impressive numbers were against the Brewers. Roll Eyes)

I would say the Cards helped themselves by not participating in the Silly Money going for pitchers this offseason; I'd much rather see a midseason deal than a $12million mistake.

By the way, 29 days until Pitchers and Catchers. Valentine's Day ---- how appropriate!

Thanks Orlando for having your Cards dump their excess baggage on my Brewers. Barring injuries that could be the missing part of the puzzle that will put the Brew Crew in serious contenion in that weak NL Central..........Opps, I forgot that Division winner won the WS.

My friend Orlando and I are both members of Cardinal Nation. I've been so all of my life. The Redbirds have stood pat and are counting on some of those young arms stepping up. I think this will be a very exciting year. We did get Kennedy to play second base. Now, we will see if he plays at the level he was projected so many years ago when he was a rookie.

I went to the Brewer dog-n-pony show last night and as it passed through Madison and had a great time. We had 2 tables of ten who had an over/under bet on how many times Suppans name would be mentioned. With each mention you had to take a Wisconsin size drink of beer , in the end no one new how many times they said Suppan.

The best part of the off season is talkin about the next season.
I like Suppan. He eats innings, is a mature presence in the clubhouse, and just does his job. He also had a heck of a second half and was superb post- season. (Although so was Weaver, and I pretty much thought a reasonably good softball team could score 4 or 5 off him Wink).

But $42 mil over 4 years? All I can say is, 'way to cash in, Soup, good on ya!'

Hey, it's not like he's just added a new pitch, or put some more pop on his fastball. With the Cards, he went 44-26; and 12-2 of that was against the Brewers. Make the most of him those first two years, 'cause when he's in his mid-thirties and ya'll owe him $12.5 a year, you want to be thinking fondly of him.
its, sweetheart. The Mets are cute and all, but they're really just an uppity expansion team Wink whereas the Cardinals have been around for over 100 years.

In this daydream of yours, I can only assume that Adam Wainwright would, of course, be one of those you'd want to keep. Oh, and Yadier Molina. And all the other components of Game 7.....

I've got the DVD if you want to borrow it
I like everything the Cubs have done so far, but I still think that success or failure this season will depend on the same 2 guys as the last 4 years, Prior and Wood. If they pitch up to their salaries, Zambrano stays hot, and their new offensive pieces pan out, things could be pretty good this year. Pencil DeRosa in for 75 RBI's, and don't be surprised if Soriano has a 50 & 50 year. Personally I think their biggest question mark right now is where they are gonna put Murton. The rumors seem to be that he won't be playing CF, so I don't know what their plan is. We shall see, but as I say every year, this could be our year!!
Orioles, commonly known as the "O's", as in "O my gosh, owner Angelouse is still there".

The O's helped themselves by not unloading any of their good young pitchers. If Daniel Cabrerra ever gets his act fully together, he could be the best starter in baseball. The biggest problem is the ability or willingness, or both, of the Dang Yankees and Red Sux to spend themselves into oblivion.

Having said all that, if the young pitching shows the benefit of last year's experience, the O's could suprise a whole lot of folks.

They also signed one of my son's former college teammates as a free agent, so I can't bash them too much, and hope to see him climbing that ladder.

Puh-leeez! If there's one team in the MLB that people say this about year after year after year, it's the Oreos. Until that stiff sells the team to someone who knows what he's doing, and until Cal Ripken takes over as manager, I don't give them a shot.
Astros...
...signed what will go down as the MO VAUGHN of this generation. If they were going to spend that much money this year, they should have spent the money 2 years ago to retain Carlos Beltran.
...Mark Loretta--very good signing. Can play several spots. Hits a decent amount. Should take over at 2B as soon as Biggio gets his 3,000 and gets phased out.
Until last night, I would have said NO.....

but then....

After two months of trying, the Pittsburgh Pirates finally landed a deal for Atlanta power hitter Adam LaRoche on Wednesday when they agreed to acquire the first baseman for left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez.......

Now I say yes......Plus any deal that didnt take Zach Duke out of our rotation was ok by me......

Looking forward to '07, especially since the hated White Sox look weaker.

Holden,

Haven't you been assimilated into Red Sox nation yet?

I don't think that will ever happen. Cheer for the Red Sox? Yes. Be passionate about them? No.
CV
Holden, with you on liking what the Cubbies have done thus far. Article in todays Sun-Times states that for the first time in 3 years they are not counting on anything from Prior.
If they do get a decent season from him and Wood can contribute and throw strikes in the pen they could contend. Plus, a manager with a pulse who's willing to jump on anyone who doesn't hustle or play fundamentally sound baseball can only help.
The last couple of years looked like garbage time - the last 3 minutes of a NBA 30 point blowout. It can only get better, right?
well i just finished watching my cardinals dvd again. but i have to disagree, i think the cards should have signed suppan. i have discussed this with many people and if suppan is a midrotation pitcher then 10 million a year is too much. but if your like me i see him as a number 2 pitcher, he has been a STOPPER for the redbirds. has cardinals nation for got about game 7!

but other than that cards do what they always do, dont overspend and it tends to work out. cards do need another pitcher, cant expect reyes, wainright, & wells to all have good years. it would be great for them all to pitch like we expect them to. but chances are someone will get hurt or end up pitching terrible.

last season cards finished the year with different starters than they started with. cards have resources to make a move when the right one appears. gotta have faith in walt!
Maybe in July we could have signed Suppan for a couple of years at a decent rate. However, with his first half, there wasn't exactly a lot of motivation to do so. With his superb second half and postseason, Soup was understandably looking to cash in, and he was expecting a lot more money than his career performance could justify --- and given the money being thrown at pitchers this offseason, he timed it well.

We paid him $11 million for 3 years; now he's getting $42 million for 4 years. Do we expect him to be three times better over the next few years than he has been for us?

Better to let a guy go a year too early than a few years too late. I would not have been unhappy to sign him, but not for anything near what the Brewers are paying him. Good luck to him; just not against us.

Braves fan here, and I hated to see Ol' Spacey go. He reminds me of Sid Bream a little bit with his mannerisms and lumbering around the bases. ATL will have a drop off at the plate having to platoon Thornton and Craig Wilson IMHO. Too many K's.

Anyway, as much as I hated to lose LaRoche, I understand that our bullpen SUCKED, with a Capital S-U-C-K-E-D, and had to be improved. Getting Soriano from the Mariners for Ramirez was great and adding Gonzalez was big for us too. I'm not so concerned about losing Giles at 2B, although the idea of replacing him with a grab bag of unknowns is not real comforting.

Hudson and Hampton have to return to top form for us to have a realistic chance, however, because C. Jones, A. Jones, Francouer, Thornton, etc. strike out way more than they make an appearance on SportsCenter for hitting doubles and dingers. I won't miss Thompson or Ramirez in the rotation. I don't really know what Tanyon Sturtze will bring, since he's been injured with a rotator cuff.

I think the Pirates made a good move getting LaRoche and improved themselves. I'm a Pirates fan also, as Maholm is a Miss State grad like me. Except I couldn't break 70 so my baseball "career" ended a longass time ago.
