Some of our newer members may not know who Zach Duke is, but he is the son of OnePlayer'sPop, a very popular poster for many years in our forums.

Way back in 2001 we had the fun of reading OnePlayersPop's (OPP) very modest and well-written posts about watching his son get drafted right out of high school, by the Pirates in the 20th round. We got to look over Dad's shoulder as he acted as a sounding board for his son's deliberations - whether to sign or continue on to college baseball with a nice scholarship. And many of us smiled with excitement as we read OPP's post describing the note his son Zach left to tell his parents that he had decided to sign.

Zach moved thru the levels of MiLB pretty quickly and made his MLB debut with the Pirates in 2005, only 4 years out of high school. He compiled amazing stats that first MLB season - 8 wins, 2 losses, and an ERA of 1.81. He continued as a solid starter for the Pirates thru last year, then was traded to the Diamondbacks this past off-season.

He looked good in Spring Training but in March of this year, he broke his hand when hit by a line drive.

Now here comes the good part...
Smile Smile

Zach is back from the DL with a stellar start, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings, NO RUNS, earning the W, and...

He even hit a 3-run homer to help the offense out!

Congrats to Zach, a great young man from a wonderful family. It's so nice to see such a happy comeback.

Julie- And he was an All-Star in '09!

Not many people can take an 0-2 high fastball and hit an oppo bomb in Houston like that. You know, if the whole pitching thing doesn't work out, there've been some guys in the past that have switched positions at some point during the career. Some guy named Ruth seemed to like it...

he is still one of my favs!

Me, too! Smile He is the only current MLB player who I have gotten to chat with over a beer. Very intelligent with a charming smile and sparkle in his eye, as well as being modest and thoughtful. I'm guessing Zach would have succeeded in any career he pursued!
