Re: PG Showcase Questions

PGStaff ·
The Predraft has always been held during the week usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday. The main reason is because it is college tournament time and by Tuesday there is not much basebal;l being played. This allows the Scouting Directors, crosscheckers and other scouts the best time to attend. It is a "heavily" scouted event, that has had a lot of early draft picks attend. It is for top players from high school and college. One year we had brothers attend... Brian McCann was in HS, older brother...

Re: The State of Baseball in New Hampshire

UNHBaseball11 ·
If I am there I will be sure to do so. I understand that UNH has all but given up the possibility of re-instituting an intercollegiate basebal team. That being said, my main problem is that the University shows so little support and willingness to work with the baseball club. While we are certainly a competitive team on the field, due to the nature of our equipment, facilities, and means of transportation, we arrive at games looking like, as our coach would say, "a box of crayons."

Re: NCAA Ruling with Balks

Michael S. Taylor ·
OBR is Official Basebal Rules. This would be the same ruling in OBR. WHat happens is it is a delayed dead ball and if all runners advance one base and the BR makes first sfaely then the balk is nullified. If any of these conditions aren't met then you kill the ball, return the batter and enforce the balk. You can have outs on this play as long as it after the one base requirement. In HS it is imediate dead ball, enforce the balk. The OBR ruling would be true in any OBR based system such as...

Re: Value of the Stolen Base?

CoachB25 ·
I once had a team steal 230 bases. It is being scrutinezed now by the IHSA for induction into the state records. Our 6'5" 240 lbs firstbaseman stole 18. We had 4 with 40 or more. That team wasn't supposed to be very good according to some "experts." They won 25 games. Had we not run, we would not have won 10. It isn't just the stolen base. It is the pressure in every other facet of the game. I could elaborate more but basebal people such as the posters on this site understand all of the...

Hey...been a while. We need a "bump" here. Who is that leading the Cape in K's and top 5 in ERA?!!! I have lost track of ChefMike but I sure am proud of his son! What a comeback from TJ. Also, did anyone see his incredible performance against Stanford in the Regionals?! 1 run, 1 BB, 6K in 6.2 IP. You can run, ChefMike, but Jeremy cannot hide. CaCO3Girl ·
Being one of those 2020 parents I just googled the article. http://ericcressey.com/basebal...oney-and-get-injured The gist is that showcases that fall during a players "down time" is not a good idea because you can't be "on" all year long, it's unhealthy. I have a question. Would this statement made in the article still be true? "I can honestly say that in all my years of training baseball players, I’ve only seen one kid who was “discovered” at a showcase. And, frankly, it occurred in...

I read the article years ago and when it was posted today. Here is the thing, I am not going to get into where a player gets discovered. Playing in tournaments is a lot different than off season showcases. I think many of us here have tried to get that point across. Funny how we all see things differently, but as I always said, the folks of the younger set will realize how important this type of info will be someday when their player needs some major surgery..BEFORE HE RECEIVES A COMMITMENT.

It has also been discussed many times on this board that things have changed over the last 5 years. This article is 6 years old. I was wondering if showcases played a bigger part now in most people's recruiting path than they did 6 years ago.

I think you bring up a valid point. While there are top tournaments and showcases done right, there are others that arent. That was why I felt that the article, although written a few years back, had merit. As a parent be smart, choose and spend wisely.

MVP 8 Buckeye Basebal Academy 6 MVP got back on winning track in nine innings. Justin Guiliano pitched three innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on three hits. Sean Swetnam hurled four innings, allowing only an unearned run on three hits. Will Krasne pitched a hitless, scoreless eighth and ninth for the win. Brandon Erbe led the offense with three hits, including a double and two RBIs. Scott Miller added two hits. Corey Overholtzer doubled in a run. Ryan Murray knocked in a run also.

Records always will be relative to the times that were set. For example, pitchers were not the same when Ruth set his record. Saves are now easier to broke, because 30 years ago was not closers. Carl Ripken record, never will be broken, because actual players make too much money to play for pride. How many Pete Rose's hits were hit because the astro turf in so many parks in the 70's.? How many HR Bonds will hit today if the pitching mount and the fences were the same that in the 70's? Do...

Well said. It's part of coach speak to get you on board. Sometimes it's said because they have a tough time with getting commitment later than sooner. It's not always a bad thing, but it's just an example that they know how to do it better than we do.

Keep in mind that many of these players released were temps until the post season was over. As to RedFish's response, he is right, the coaches have to notify players by the 30th.

I noticed some guys activated (resulting in the release of someone else), that were in Omaha. I think that needs to be taken into consideration. I kind of compare this to milb transactions. It's pretty active this time of year, replacing current guys to make a spot for the newly drafted.

UCLA has had some notable successes. David Berg for one, who I believe ended up as the NCAA all time saves leader. Good article here: http://dailybruin.com/2012/09/...nd-for-ucla-basebal/ Also, the dh on last year's UCLA team, who started as a walk-on freshman.

Re: Preferred Walk-on / Admissions

Here is where problems come into play. The category is “hearing/seeing what you want to hear rather than what is being said.” When the term “preferred walk on” comes up in conversation some parents and players will tell themselves how well it worked out for a handful of players. Therefore it’s ok. What they don’t know is how many players at UCLA tried to walk on and got nowhere. As suggested it must be asked of the coach, “What does it mean in my situation?”

We use this one: https://www.easton.com/basebal...s/e100g-8014602.html Bats actually fit lengthwise inside the bag and for extra protection we put them in cardboard mailing tubes (purchased at a UPS store for a few dollars). We have never had to pay any extra luggage fees so it seems this bag is within the standard bag size to check in. My son's mitt always goes with him in the carry-on bag.

Re: Poll: No steroid users in record books

You can't go back and apply punishement to a 'crime' retroactively . Let's say the feds find Bonds used steroids illegaly. Basebal can't just arbitrarily apply a punishement that wasn't already in their by-laws. As for the future. The policy should be: Get caught the first time- one year supsension. Get caught 2nd time- lifetime ban. That sends the message. The five strike policy is a joke.

It wasn't a basketball move. The Big East is stronger than the ACC. It was a business move based on football issues will ultimately cause the Big East to crumble. Why should Syracuse be forced to have a baseball program? How are they going to draw ACC level talent to play in their weather?

I agree with Bulldog19 that it would be difficult to force a school to add a sport as there are cost issues as well as possible Title IX issues. Syracuse has a softball team. There are other D1 baseball schools in upstate NY including Albany, Binghampton, Buffalo, and Cornell. Granted it is the ACC we're talking about, but it is doable (Carrier Dome?) or they may spend the first 4-6 weeks on the road like most northern teams. This is no different than other D1 northern schools, but the...

This is a great read from a long time coach and player. "Baseball Is Life Is Baseball" was inspired by a magical high school baseball season culminating in a State Championship. The lessons learned along the way serve as a recipe for success both on and off the field. The author uses his vast experience as teacher, coach, and player to list the ingredients and proper blending of them necessary to guarantee success. This is not a book of baseball fundamentals. It is about the many qualities...
