PG 17U WWBA /National Academic /Sunshine Northeast /Atlantic Coast Top Prospect
My 2017 is considering the PG National Academic or the Sunshine Northeast (same days), the Atlantic Coast top Prospect (late August). In addition, his team will be at the 17U WWBA at Lakepoint (early July). He is a RHP (max 88mph in Fall last year)/MIF who has has received text/email/phone interest from top/mid D1's as a RHP. Academics (>3.5)/Test scores (ACT 28) all good. The big question is many coaches that have seen him at Camps and such, want to see him in games. Do games at PG...

Perfect Game event questions
My son, class of 2018, is a catcher who will be attending a Perfect Game event in Colorado in May. Living in Colorado, we decided this was a great opportunity for him. Now I am hearing he should only go to Perfect Game events in the areas in which he wants to go to college. Should he be requesting invitations to other regional events, to include the National Academic in June? Will going to one event be enough, given he scores out well? Background on him, if it's even relevant: varsity...

Re: JUCO Recruiting
Didn't the SRJC website used to have a list of all recent 4 year transfers? All I see right now is links to newspaper articles about two players. Something like this has to be a more effective recruiting tool: http://www.cabrillo.edu/academ...baseball/alumni.html

Nybaseballdad, the Steel Academy seems to be a new academy out of Baseball Heaven so this is a new showcase. i looked and didn't see a price or who is running it. Summer after my son's freshman year he attended the NY Baseball Academy 3 day camp program which was excellent. It was $475 and you are working with college and varsity coaches. they gave an extensive written evaluation and also provided video. Re: PG 17U WWBA /National Academic /Sunshine Northeast /Atlantic Coast Top Prospect
PG can be powerful for sure. Depending upon many things its not for everyone. You're son will be a needle in a haystack. They have tens of thousands of kids they're looking at any given weekend at tournaments alone. There showcases are 400-500 kids minimum. College coaches mostly incognito on sidelines so you never know if you may have caught an eye. 99% will leave the showcase and or tournament never hearing a word from anyone that might have seen them. 88 max velo is good but that will not...

Re: PG 17U WWBA /National Academic /Sunshine Northeast /Atlantic Coast Top Prospect
I would highly recommend the Complete Showcase. Guaranteed a minimum amount of coaches (usually 30 but could be up to 100) and a maximum amount of participants. Your son will be evaluated by 2 college coaches but will be looked at by more. No more wondering if a college scout or coach will be at a game or whether you have to make the championship round to be seen.

Re: PG 17U WWBA /National Academic /Sunshine Northeast /Atlantic Coast Top Prospect
If he has never done a PG showcase, your son may want to attend at least one late spring/early summer to see where he is relative to his peers and get some updated video and verified numbers. If he does well enough, he could receive an invite to the PG National Showcase, which is loaded with college coaches who want to see the best match ups. As far as tournament play this summer, USA Baseball 17U National Team Championships (east or west), 17U WWBA, and an Area Code tryout if you can get an...

Thanks for all the posts. My 2017 has been to two PG WWBA tournaments, but not to any of the PG showcases yet. That is what prompted my initial question about the value and relative pros and cons of PG run tournaments and showcases. At tournaments, the players are evaluated on game performances and that is always a hit or miss in my opinion (depending on where you play for example at Lakepoint or area HS fields, who you are playing, and who is watching you at any given point when you are...

Re: PG 17U WWBA /National Academic /Sunshine Northeast /Atlantic Coast Top Prospect
Phanatic, Comparing a PG showcase to a PG tournament is apples and oranges. Both are fruits and a necessary part of recruiting, IMO, but they accomplish different goals. The PG Tournament is where players show they can get out decent hitters, rather than simply striking out the same kid from a rival high school over and over. And, if they get hit a little bit, they can show their makeup....among other things. Their velo, command, etc. may or may not be noted. The PG Showcase is where they...

Thanks for the reply Redbird5. I totally appreciate the feedback. Definitely worth looking at the tourneys and showcases as separate, that both feed into an equation. Also, point well taken about the "dad with rose colored glasses - not Oakleys". He was at 88 max (sitting around 86) but at a camp that most coaches there saw, but no recording via a neutral entity like PG. So that is needed. Thank you.

Redbird, Thanks for the explanation, good one BTW. Often I want to say some of the same things, but am afraid it would come off the wrong way and people would think I am BSing. Phanatic, Sounds like your son could create some interest. So much depends on the other things once the velocity is recognized. Is that 86-88 look like the end or does it look like there is more to come in the near future? Are the other pitches usable now and how much can they improve? Can he pitch? I can tell you...

Re: PG 17U WWBA /National Academic /Sunshine Northeast /Atlantic Coast Top Prospect
I would do the PG Northeast Showcase in June and set his measurables heading into the summer season. You'll have his velo numbers, PG rating, video and comparison with his class out there for anyone to see post-showcase plus you'll have whatever coaches are there watching him. Redbird has a lot more knowledge and experience than I do but my 2016 played with 2 RHPs with similar to your 2017 (one last year and one this year). Both had max velos 1 MPH below yours and sat/sit around the same and...

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I am convinced on the need for going to a PG showcase. PGSTAFF: appreciate all the nuances to stocking up player projections that come into play. Although challenging, over the course of many years, these intangibles that we refer to (body type, arm action, command, secondary pitch readiness, poise, ability to get batters out, etc) have coalesced with metrics (pitch velocity, spin rate, etc). Together they are better aids to project what a 16 year old...

Re: PG Rankings and High Follow
It has been suggested that I don’t do this because the rankings are actually supposed to be for subscribers only. However, our rankings change so often it doesn’t much matter. In fact, we are updating the rankings again next week. Even a new #1 I’m not sure how well this will copy, but hopefully good enough. NR means they were not ranked by us as sophomores. You will notice more than one #500, that is because there are several players ranked 500. I haven’t studied this to have any thoughts.

Re: Perfect Game event questions
The PG events that attract the most coaches and scouts are the tournaments where the travel teams play. The national events have lots and lots of top level programs scouting the events, and many recruit heavily at them. My 2017 attended two PG showcases in Southern California where there is tons of talent and schools looking to recruit. However, there were very few schools and scouts beyond PG's own scouts who assign the player ratings at the showcase events. We saw some local JCs and a few...

I'm in Iowa, so Perfect Game is right down the street (okay, interstate). 2018 was invited to a showcase, but I know his travel team plans to play a tournament there this fall. We really want to get him to a PG event — sounds like the recommendation would be the tournament over the showcase?

Re: Perfect Game event questions
That depends. If he is a known player, meaning you're in contact with schools that have shown an interest, then a tournament is optimal assuming you can get his pitching/playing schedule to the coaches who have expressed an interest. If you happen to be playing against a team with a lot of heavily recruited players and your kid shows something spectacular at the right time, you might draw some interest that way, but the don't have a bunch of recruiters wondering around without a purpose just...

He has a couple of offers, and we actually will be en route to a campus visit with another school he's talking to. He seems pretty happy with the schools he is talking to, I just wondered if the spring showcase would be better timing than a fall tournament as far as timing for getting interest from any schools that he hasn't been talking with yet? But as I write that, it feels like a lot of money for a not very specific goal.

Re: Perfect Game event questions
There is no doubt that schools use PG showcase write ups and stats for exactly that reason - to find players they haven't noticed before.

Re: Perfect Game event questions
Correct. It's the Rocky Mountain Showcase. Thanks for the input. He had been staying with his high school team over the summers, but it sounds like this year we may need to evaluate that (assuming its not too late). As the youth and high school landscape has changed, the model of staying with your high school team over the summer seems to be going the way of the dinosaur. His coach is trying to get to more showcase tournaments to sort of combat that trend, but I think for higher talent that...

Re: Perfect Game event questions
I hear you Coach. The process has changed a lot in recent years, and my biggest regret on my 2017 was not seeking a stronger travel ball team for him to give him a chance to be in these bigger tournament events. That said, you do want the Summer leading into Senior year to be where he can get the most exposure to the most schools, so attending some of the showcases is also a great way to go if he has something to show. The HS coaches in our area around SoCal are usually reasonable in letting...

Re: Perfect Game event questions
We do not list coaches and scouts because we don't pay them to be there. It means a lot more when they actually want to be there to see the players and spend money to be there. Seeing that we never pay them, it is impossible to know who will be at any event for sure. All showcases are not the same, including ours. We will be doing some June showcases that have few scouts and colleges attend. We will also be doing some that will have scouts from every MLB club and most all the top college...

Thanks, PGStaff! Again the recruiting landscape is foreign to us (as a parent), so your input is invaluable! Regarding the evaluations, will Mike be given a good idea of the level of play he is best suited for in those evaluations? Or, is it strictly an objective recitation of the skills he displayed? Does that make sense? His list of colleges is not even close to being narrowed down (other than by desired major, architecture). And as a parent, we want to balance dreams and realities. As a...
