PG 17U WWBA /National Academic /Sunshine Northeast /Atlantic Coast Top Prospect

Phanatic2008WS ·
My 2017 is considering the PG National Academic or the Sunshine Northeast (same days), the Atlantic Coast top Prospect (late August). In addition, his team will be at the 17U WWBA at Lakepoint (early July). He is a RHP (max 88mph in Fall last year)/MIF who has has received text/email/phone interest from top/mid D1's as a RHP. Academics (>3.5)/Test scores (ACT 28) all good. The big question is many coaches that have seen him at Camps and such, want to see him in games. Do games at PG...

When was your position player offered by any top academic? Any top academic offers to position players while they were Juniors?

Gov ·
I'm curious when, and at what events your position players were offered by top academic D1's or D3's? Was it after a Nov junior year HF or Showball event, or at an Ivy, D3, Patriot league camp in Feb junior year, or after Sacramento HF event? (Noticing a few early pitcher commits to Harvard and Yale on PG) If your position player was offered during junior year, can tell us when and at what type of an event your son was noticed? What was the tool motivating the coach to offer? Seems like...

13U Select 30 Championships Top Prospects 7/30-8/5, 2017

PROBEAGLE ·
Hello All, I'm looking for some feedback regarding this event. My 13U son's coach handed out 3 of these "Golden Tickets" this past weekend at the DFW USSSA Select 30 Super NIT. I realize 13 YOs are a few years away from a meaningful scouting experience and our expectations should be aligned. Other than experiencing his first combine national event such as this, here are few questions I have: 1. How many invitations are given out? Are these tickets given to mostly competitive teams?

I checked the site. There are no colleges listed for most locations. There is no pricing (at least without going several pages into enrollment). There are a bunch of links that go nowhere. There is no detail to the daily format. When do you plan on actually having the necessary information for someone to make a decision regarding your events?

Hi @cabbagedad - If you click on the session-specific link (like this one for Boston: https://www.top96.com/session/boston-session-1/ ) you can see the colleges that have confirmed so far, as well as the price down at the bottom of the page. We're going to have multiple sessions in each geography, but haven't launched those second sessions yet, which is why on the Locations pages (like this one for Boston: https://www.top96.com/location/boston/ ) those details aren't listed - if you click on...

Thanks for the help. My son says he feels fine and his arm feels stronger then ever. He insists that he was throwing upper 70's -80 when radared (it was a try out camp this past weekend) and the gun has to be wrong. He says the readings were a hot topic among the other pitchers. He seemed to be popping the catchers mit. I did see two senior boys throwing 74-78 which seems slow for their age and the ability levels at this try out. I thought maybe the club coach set the veloc. low (possible?)...

PG can be powerful for sure. Depending upon many things its not for everyone. You're son will be a needle in a haystack. They have tens of thousands of kids they're looking at any given weekend at tournaments alone. There showcases are 400-500 kids minimum. College coaches mostly incognito on sidelines so you never know if you may have caught an eye. 99% will leave the showcase and or tournament never hearing a word from anyone that might have seen them. 88 max velo is good but that will not...

I would highly recommend the Complete Showcase. Guaranteed a minimum amount of coaches (usually 30 but could be up to 100) and a maximum amount of participants. Your son will be evaluated by 2 college coaches but will be looked at by more. No more wondering if a college scout or coach will be at a game or whether you have to make the championship round to be seen.

If he has never done a PG showcase, your son may want to attend at least one late spring/early summer to see where he is relative to his peers and get some updated video and verified numbers. If he does well enough, he could receive an invite to the PG National Showcase, which is loaded with college coaches who want to see the best match ups. As far as tournament play this summer, USA Baseball 17U National Team Championships (east or west), 17U WWBA, and an Area Code tryout if you can get an...

Thanks for all the posts. My 2017 has been to two PG WWBA tournaments, but not to any of the PG showcases yet. That is what prompted my initial question about the value and relative pros and cons of PG run tournaments and showcases. At tournaments, the players are evaluated on game performances and that is always a hit or miss in my opinion (depending on where you play for example at Lakepoint or area HS fields, who you are playing, and who is watching you at any given point when you are...

Phanatic, Comparing a PG showcase to a PG tournament is apples and oranges. Both are fruits and a necessary part of recruiting, IMO, but they accomplish different goals. The PG Tournament is where players show they can get out decent hitters, rather than simply striking out the same kid from a rival high school over and over. And, if they get hit a little bit, they can show their makeup....among other things. Their velo, command, etc. may or may not be noted. The PG Showcase is where they...

Thanks for the reply Redbird5. I totally appreciate the feedback. Definitely worth looking at the tourneys and showcases as separate, that both feed into an equation. Also, point well taken about the "dad with rose colored glasses - not Oakleys". He was at 88 max (sitting around 86) but at a camp that most coaches there saw, but no recording via a neutral entity like PG. So that is needed. Thank you.

Redbird, Thanks for the explanation, good one BTW. Often I want to say some of the same things, but am afraid it would come off the wrong way and people would think I am BSing. Phanatic, Sounds like your son could create some interest. So much depends on the other things once the velocity is recognized. Is that 86-88 look like the end or does it look like there is more to come in the near future? Are the other pitches usable now and how much can they improve? Can he pitch? I can tell you...

I would do the PG Northeast Showcase in June and set his measurables heading into the summer season. You'll have his velo numbers, PG rating, video and comparison with his class out there for anyone to see post-showcase plus you'll have whatever coaches are there watching him. Redbird has a lot more knowledge and experience than I do but my 2016 played with 2 RHPs with similar to your 2017 (one last year and one this year). Both had max velos 1 MPH below yours and sat/sit around the same and...

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I am convinced on the need for going to a PG showcase. PGSTAFF: appreciate all the nuances to stocking up player projections that come into play. Although challenging, over the course of many years, these intangibles that we refer to (body type, arm action, command, secondary pitch readiness, poise, ability to get batters out, etc) have coalesced with metrics (pitch velocity, spin rate, etc). Together they are better aids to project what a 16 year old...

My son is a position player in his Jr year. He has gotten some attention by Hi Academic D1- D3 but have been told that they want to see a complete three years worth of semester grades inorder to move to the next level. They are very reserved in making any more movements beside that. At least to MY son. It is about transcripts of three full years I was told by a couple RCs. Gov, you know my 2017 son's story; it closely parallels 2boydads, including SAT scores, size, and speed and what we heard from Ivy coaches, in particular, about what they want from their outfielders. Every high academic coach son dealt with (all private schools) became more interested after they heard his mid Junior year GPA and SAT scores. At that point we knew it was going to be about the baseball: if he was a good enough player, and they needed someone in his position, his academics were...

Smoke, having done the HF Jupiter during junior year, as you did with your older one, my sense was if you had a big 88-90 arm as a junior you got some real attention. Vandy, Duke, William & Mary, Texas, and HPY were on the hunt to acquire top 2018 pitchers. I thought the combination of AZ Fall Junior Classic, then 3 weeks later to be at HF Jupiter would be a chance for my 2018 to be seen twice in front of the same group of coaches on his list. My son was selected for the 14u event last year from the same tournament. There was a way to see who had been invited once the event was added to your son's player profile. For the most part, they were inviting the right kids. A lot of good players off of good majors teams. They ended up cancelling the event and all of the select 30 events. Wesley, Stay as far away from Pitch Harder as you possibly can. I'm not a big fan of Top Velocity either, as Olympic Lifts can be dangerous and probably are not as effective as just plain old good synching of the kinetic chain. Top Velocity, however, is light years more legitimate than Pitch Harder.
